OT, but then again...
What's this mess about the terror threat level being red now due to a plot in London? Hmmm, Brother Rove sure does move fast to make something happen to put the fear back in the folks. Of course, it just happens in concert w/Dems getting stronger in time for elections. I think it is trumped up. And I am TIRED of living w/FEAR!!! If the monies spent on "Fatherland Security" thus far haven't proven effective - it's time to revamp the system.

One of my not very admirable pastimes is visiting right-slanted sites that invite comments.
I have created any number of personae for the purpose:
Wide-hipped ol' lady in floral print housedress, regular Southern Baptist church-goer, addicted to flag, country, and apple pie: Esme Hawkins.
Young button-down everything thwarted-achievement man keen to pursue the war and to smash anyone who doesn't -- though having, for himself, other plans which make it impossible for him to join the military: Harold Gossett.
Well-meaning if somewhat addled middle-aged, well-to-do lady who apparently inadvertently carries Bush doctrine to extremes which are patently illegal: Joan Carter Gibbon.
All three have been welcomed warmly by other commenters at the site -- no one points out flaws in arguments or errors of fact.
A sense of humor obviously isn't the only thing GOPers lack.
A GOPer site is a good place to visit on a day when it's too hot to think coherently. It's not a requirement there.

I'm very skeptical of any claims of photoshopping, because it's usually very hard to proove/falsify such a claim, so I tried really hard to make the 'O' look like the final product just by adjusting levels, contrast, brightness, exposure, gamma, sharpness, tint, temperature.
Can't be done, and I consider myself pretty good with the photoshop.
You would have to have put that there on purpose.

Hey watertiger YOU GOT MAIL
I took the flickr photo and the photo from "Dean Goes Mad" which clearly is where GOP.com got their Dean photo.
I sized the larger GOP.com photo to match exactly over the flickr photo then I set the transfer mode between the images to "difference". This will show black where there are no differences between the corresponding pixels of each layer.
The only area where there's a difference is right under Dean's nose. It's clear as day.

Same as Michael here on trying to reproduce the full Hitler-stache visible in the final just with contrast, etc. Couldn't do it.
You can come close, but the original shadow just doesn't extend far enough to the right (as you look at him).
It looks like someone played with the contrast, saw how close the shadow came to a Hitler-stache, and just slightly extended the shadow to the right to complete the effect.

it looks to me like someone used the brush tool. I can think of several ways to accomplish the photo alteration. You could create a layer of pure black on top of the Dean photo, set the opacity really low (<10%) and apply a 'hide all' mask. Then take the brush tool to the mask to add a little darkening just under his nose. You could also set a higher opacity and play with the transfer modes like Overlay or Screen.
This photo was definitely altered to give Dean a moustache.

If todays terror plot was really a ploy by Bush why didn't they pull the trigger on it before the CT primaries to give Indy Joe a boost? With all kinds of doctered and staged photos where dead bodies of children are used as stage props why even care about this photo. There are all kinds of people on the left that call Bush "Hitler". So I am just curious why its such a big deal? I am not some wingnut troll trying to pick a blog fight with these questions. I am an independent thinker who likes to ask questions of both sides and make up my own mind. I have asked these same questions on many "left wing" blogs and they either have not been posted or I was just called a bunch of names and ridiculed. I suppose I dont really care how you guys respond but I would like to here some intelligent thoughts from the left on the questions.

Proving that this picture has been photoshopped doesn't disprove the underlying idea that Dean is a fascist, any more than proving that Adnan Hajj cloned smoke over Beruit disproves the idea that IAF is bombing babies, or that proving that Dan Rather did a story featuring faked memos disproves that Dubya was AWOL.

I think we can all agree that the simple fact that you're using false evidence to try to prove a point doesn't disprove the point.
However, the fact that you needed to rely on false evidence, and that it took at least a small amount of time to manufacture the false evidence, *does* (at least IMHO) imply the real evidence is hard to find. That in turn suggests that the point you're trying to make isn't obviously true, or you'd expect to find at least some easily available evidence that was credible.
Or perhaps you're just *really* lazy. But then the time spent faking the evidence would be an issue...
And, for the record, the documents in the Dan Rather incident were never proven false. They simply could not be verified with sufficient certainty. No matter what the brilliant font analysts in RightWingnuttia claim. Also, there was a lot of other supporting evidence that was overlooked in the hue and cry about the "faked" documents. Almost as if that was the point.

John-
Seems pretty obvious to me, actually. Remember, Lieberman isn't a Republican (he's just a "useful idiot" to them, at least so far): i.e. the Repubs don't really care whether he wins or loses. No doubt, they would much rather have an actual (R) sitting in that seat in a Dem-leaning state, making it that much more likely that they would hold onto leadership positions in the Senate after November.
Look at it from the position/perspective of last Saturday night, not knowing who will win or lose. Revealing this information then _might_ swing the Dem primary (or might not). Lieberman pulls off a squeaker as a result, let's say. Lamont either drops out (likely, since he didn't have the incumbancy factor to lean on), or runs as an independent, likely with only a minor impact on November. Either way, the information is "used" at that point, and largely useless for setting up the kind of narrative that they've (the GOP) has been pushing for the last 24 hours or so, plus Lieberman, who for all his rhetoric still lines up on the (D) side of the aisle.
Given that as an alternative, it made perfect sense to hang on to the info at least until after the primary... and possibly longer, if Lieberman had won anyway... an Ace in the hole, as it were, to muddy the journalistic waters at some convenient time. In the current situation, it "supports" the narrative they badly want to push.
Hope that helps...

Here is my problem guys.....and gals. I live in a place called Utah. Great place to live but the political debate here is really one sided. Very sterile. I dont have a problem with people who have a certain point of veiw (right or left). But for Pete's sake know why. I talk to so many Pro-Bush people here that are just sadly uneducated about the issues that we are faced with today. I moved here a few years ago from Boulder CO. An even better place to live but with the same problems. Too many people on the left who are there because everyone else is. They dont relly know why. Both of these groups I mention base their decisions on little more then emotion. I am a facts and figures kinda guy. I dont care what the answer is as long as its true. I simply want truth and its hard to find anymore. I am not here to stir the pot. Just looking for some good Socratic debate. From both sides! Finally found it Thanks!

I hate to pop your balloons here, but you should never attribute malice to something that can be more easily explained by laziness.
Imagine you are a little GOP website welp who needs to whip up a banner with all of those Democrat faces. The fastest thing for you to do is to fire up Google image search and grab the first clean image of the Dean scream you can find.
You then resize it and put it on the page. Simple, quick, and easy, until someone gets bent out of shape about the smudge in the picture. A picture found on a blog entry made back in January 2004.
You may want to ask blogman or lordbyron or whoever where *he* got the picture from. I bet it was Karl Rove.

I would tend to agree with sue on this one. It applies to the doctered photos coming out of the Middle East. We all know there are civilians being killed. There are all kinds of people on the left who call Bush "Hitler". So I am curious why its such a big deal.
Point. The mustache-on-Bush meme was quite popular in 2004. The original intent was no doubt to emphasize the fascist leanings of many members of the Bush administration--although I'm sure there were plenty of liberals in Boulder who thought that this was just amusing as heck! If memory serves me correctly, Senator Kerry's sys admin requested that Kerry's supporters refrain from such juvenile displays, and took the links to these pictures down when they appeared on his blog.
The Republicans' more recent forays into photoshopped Hitler mustaches are no doubt more of the political juvenalia that passes for wittiness on Republican blogs. However, the more recent efforts seem linked to the short-lived attempts by Lieberman's supporters to paint those Dems who opposed him as anti-Semitic. Unfortunately, that's a difficult position to maintain when some of Joe's closest friends from the synagogue tell the media they're supporting Lamont.
The terror plot is a different can of worms, entirely. The date on the Muslim calendar that corresponds to August 22, 2006 is of historical significance to many in the Middle East. Of course the "technotards" that run Homeland defense didn't realize this until they discovered the wonderful world of blogging existed for more than the mere trafficking in left-wing-whacko ideas and Internet porn. Then the full horror of the situation hit them: "My god! The A-rabs have computers! THEY BLOG TOO!!!" If HD had known about the threat before August 8, you can bet they would have released the news. Unfortunately, the brain trust in charge is still trying to figure out the difference between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims.

Somewhere on the other side of the blogosphere, a member of al Qaeda--whose English grammar and syntax is better than that of most Republicans'--is laughing his ass off.

You lefties are too funny! Your cheerleaders in the MSM get caught with their pants down with staged and photoshopped pro-terrorist images, and you respond by pointing out a -- GASP -- shadow on an image over Screaming Dean's lip that was quickly nixed by the GOP when they got wind of it.
Of course, not a peep out of you lefties about all the "ChimpHitler" stuff all over the nutroots. Hypocrisy is part and parcel of being a leftist, so no surprises here...

Are you sure the GOP added the 'stache to Howie's mug? I'm thinking maybe his 'official' pics have his trademark liphair removed in a attempt to make him look credible.

Just google or yahoo Howard Dean and several images show up that were posted/uploaded on sites over a year ago!
I smell a big fat apology coming.
Or perhaps not because progressive are never wrong because its ok if you "feel" right.

Trust the nutty left to see Hitler mustaches where they don't exist.
ah the trolls have arrived.
Actually I proved that it existed. I sent the proof to watertiger...... if you stack the 'clean' Dean photo and the old GOP.com Dean photo on top of each other in Photoshop and use the "difference" transfer mode to reveal any pixel differences, you can clearly see that someone altered the Dean photo. It's a lot more subtle than the Reuters photo 'touch-up' but it's there, clear as day.
Not that I expect facts and proof to make any difference to wingnuts.
