Gravatar Wow, nice catch.

I have my own version of the appropriate picture.

Sans Godwin.

Gravatar again, brilliant. when do you sleep girl?

Gravatar Good for you for doing the leg work on this. I think that the left wing blogospher should go all nutsy cuckoo over this one.

They're mean spirited assholes, those GOP operatives. I, for one, am fucking sick and tired of it.

Gravatar So who's the blogger that PhotoChopped the Hitler moustache on Dean??? We want names.

Gravatar Tom,

I just added the link to the guy's blog.

Gravatar OT, but then again...
What's this mess about the terror threat level being red now due to a plot in London? Hmmm, Brother Rove sure does move fast to make something happen to put the fear back in the folks. Of course, it just happens in concert w/Dems getting stronger in time for elections. I think it is trumped up. And I am TIRED of living w/FEAR!!! If the monies spent on "Fatherland Security" thus far haven't proven effective - it's time to revamp the system.
Arrrgghh!!! (if I could remember my password, I'd blog this...will get that ironed out after this weekend's move - which probably has me extra touchy) Thanks for the opportunity WT!!! E.

Gravatar Oh, as far as Mr. Dean - yeah back in the initial days after the 'holler' - it put me off of him, but lately I would MUCH rather have a true president w/enough interest in the job to be passionate about it than some lunkhead fratboy ex-cheerleader that can only fantasize about the next brush-clearing vacation...
We need some BUSH-clearing!!!

Gravatar i hope this grows legs ala the Reutergate photos ranted upon over at LGF.
Your tireless effort is appreciated.

Gravatar they also made his finger smaller bringing into question his manhood while they could search their undies all day and find nothing but lint.

Gravatar Gort - I now have water and ice all over my keyboard! Thanks!!! LOL!!!

Gravatar Thanks, Attaturk, for your response. I've posted the goop.com pic at my blog. Is the republican party now being run by adolescents? Do you think Keith Olbermann should have this picture on his show tonight? Can someone forward this to his show and the Daily Show?

Gravatar Yesterday I received an e-mail from the RNC making Lamont into a pro-al Qaeda, pro-terrorist candidate. Yup, they are classy. I wish I had saved it, but after responding, I deleted it.
These are some classy people.

Gravatar ...loverly. Nothing makes me hates the GOP more than elementary-school quality name-calling.

...sigh.

Gravatar It's dirty tricks politics from now on. It probably always has been.
We the people just never really had a way to keep track of it before, or a way to talk about it amongst ourselves.

Time to beat 'em at their own game. How fun will that be?

Gravatar Is it just me or does "Defeat-o-Crats" make it sound like Dems could specialize in being defeaters?

I say we reclaim it and start using it ourselves...

Gravatar zoe: "I'm taking it back!!!" (Clerks II) LOL!

Gravatar One of my not very admirable pastimes is visiting right-slanted sites that invite comments.

I have created any number of personae for the purpose:

Wide-hipped ol' lady in floral print housedress, regular Southern Baptist church-goer, addicted to flag, country, and apple pie: Esme Hawkins.

Young button-down everything thwarted-achievement man keen to pursue the war and to smash anyone who doesn't -- though having, for himself, other plans which make it impossible for him to join the military: Harold Gossett.

Well-meaning if somewhat addled middle-aged, well-to-do lady who apparently inadvertently carries Bush doctrine to extremes which are patently illegal: Joan Carter Gibbon.

All three have been welcomed warmly by other commenters at the site -- no one points out flaws in arguments or errors of fact.

A sense of humor obviously isn't the only thing GOPers lack.

A GOPer site is a good place to visit on a day when it's too hot to think coherently. It's not a requirement there.

Gravatar One of my not very admirable pastimes is visiting right-slanted sites that invite comments.

Ye, tho you walk in the valley of the shadow of cognative dissonance, you will fear no wingnut, for you are the coolest frood in the universe.

May the diety or life force of your choice be with you

Gravatar I thought it wasn't cool for political parties to make Nazi references (lookup: Senator Richard Durbin, D-IL).

Maybe there's something Freudian allowing conservatives to make Nazi references. That must be it.

Gravatar Outstanding work.

Keep fighting the good fight!

Where's the Outrage?

Gravatar I'm not very knowledgeable about photography, but it looks to me like the contrast of the image was increased to exaggerate any shadowing. It doesn't look like anything was added. All the shadows on Dean's face are much more pronounced in the GOP.com picture.

Gravatar Prachar,

My point is that the GOP chose a photo that has been "enhanced" instead of the original.

Gravatar I'm not very knowledgeable about photography, but it looks to me like the contrast of the image was increased to exaggerate any shadowing.

a HA! The photo was altered! Proof of a vast, vile conspiracy! Gleeful gloating! Self-righteous outrage! Self-righteous outrage over the lack of outrage!

Gravatar I think this is fantastic. Keep saying things like "Iraq is better today than a year ago," just like Lieberman. You've got to be insane or a ghoul to keep peddling war and more war at this point.

The warmongers are all going down, hard. And history will record their evil.

Gravatar Before running off and making a fool of yourself you should blow up the area and check for photo manipulation. It looks like the photo of Dean and the one of Murtha were darkened somewhat, emphasizing some stubble.

Here's Hitler for reference. Hypocrisy much?

Gravatar a la the OJ Time cover.

Gravatar suggestion: can you put the two side-by-side?

Gravatar How about darkening the picture about eight shades, then putting a black background behind it. Then it is clear the photo was unaltered.

Gravatar OMG. You mean the man I supported in the primaries is actually...Hitler?

Gravatar Even better - after you do that, post the picture, then screen grab it again. The loss of resolution enhances the shadow under his lip (even though it is pretty apparent in your high resolution photo).

Gravatar The original blogger altered it -- it matches well with his German-accented caption (follow the link).

Gravatar I'm very skeptical of any claims of photoshopping, because it's usually very hard to proove/falsify such a claim, so I tried really hard to make the 'O' look like the final product just by adjusting levels, contrast, brightness, exposure, gamma, sharpness, tint, temperature.

Can't be done, and I consider myself pretty good with the photoshop.

You would have to have put that there on purpose.

Gravatar They're just mad we've been right all along.

Gravatar Hey watertiger YOU GOT MAIL

I took the flickr photo and the photo from "Dean Goes Mad" which clearly is where GOP.com got their Dean photo.

I sized the larger GOP.com photo to match exactly over the flickr photo then I set the transfer mode between the images to "difference". This will show black where there are no differences between the corresponding pixels of each layer.

The only area where there's a difference is right under Dean's nose. It's clear as day.

Gravatar Same as Michael here on trying to reproduce the full Hitler-stache visible in the final just with contrast, etc. Couldn't do it.

You can come close, but the original shadow just doesn't extend far enough to the right (as you look at him).

It looks like someone played with the contrast, saw how close the shadow came to a Hitler-stache, and just slightly extended the shadow to the right to complete the effect.

Gravatar it looks to me like someone used the brush tool. I can think of several ways to accomplish the photo alteration. You could create a layer of pure black on top of the Dean photo, set the opacity really low (

Gravatar it looks to me like someone used the brush tool. I can think of several ways to accomplish the photo alteration. You could create a layer of pure black on top of the Dean photo, set the opacity really low (<10%) and apply a 'hide all' mask. Then take the brush tool to the mask to add a little darkening just under his nose. You could also set a higher opacity and play with the transfer modes like Overlay or Screen.

This photo was definitely altered to give Dean a moustache.

Gravatar If todays terror plot was really a ploy by Bush why didn't they pull the trigger on it before the CT primaries to give Indy Joe a boost? With all kinds of doctered and staged photos where dead bodies of children are used as stage props why even care about this photo. There are all kinds of people on the left that call Bush "Hitler". So I am just curious why its such a big deal? I am not some wingnut troll trying to pick a blog fight with these questions. I am an independent thinker who likes to ask questions of both sides and make up my own mind. I have asked these same questions on many "left wing" blogs and they either have not been posted or I was just called a bunch of names and ridiculed. I suppose I dont really care how you guys respond but I would like to here some intelligent thoughts from the left on the questions.

Gravatar Proving that this picture has been photoshopped doesn't disprove the underlying idea that Dean is a fascist, any more than proving that Adnan Hajj cloned smoke over Beruit disproves the idea that IAF is bombing babies, or that proving that Dan Rather did a story featuring faked memos disproves that Dubya was AWOL.

Gravatar If todays terror plot was really a ploy by Bush why didn't they pull the trigger on it before the CT primaries to give Indy Joe a boost?

saving it for November.

Gravatar ...but it sure is fun to point out the hypocrisy, isn't it Monster?

Gravatar r€nato:

So we all agree that the GOP, Reuters, and CBS have agendas?

Gravatar I think we can all agree that the simple fact that you're using false evidence to try to prove a point doesn't disprove the point.

However, the fact that you needed to rely on false evidence, and that it took at least a small amount of time to manufacture the false evidence, *does* (at least IMHO) imply the real evidence is hard to find. That in turn suggests that the point you're trying to make isn't obviously true, or you'd expect to find at least some easily available evidence that was credible.

Or perhaps you're just *really* lazy. But then the time spent faking the evidence would be an issue...

And, for the record, the documents in the Dan Rather incident were never proven false. They simply could not be verified with sufficient certainty. No matter what the brilliant font analysts in RightWingnuttia claim. Also, there was a lot of other supporting evidence that was overlooked in the hue and cry about the "faked" documents. Almost as if that was the point.

Gravatar Those sneaky GOP'rs change the photo on their site, and now it doesn't show Dean's mustache at all, at least on my computer!

Gravatar Jester:

Find a typewriter available for purchase in the 1970s that could produce the memos. Type them up. Show us. I believe there's still a reward on the table for anyone who can do it.

At least Reuters had the decency to admit the pictures were faked.

Gravatar Nicely done.

Gravatar why is it, that when people like Monster are confronted with someone from the right or the republicans doing something wrong, instead of simply saying, yep you are right, that's wrong, it becomes oh yeah, but what about this other time when a liberal did it?!

Gravatar Thanks for the Answers.....Really. The Intelligence level on this blog is a bit higher then your average blog. Nato-shouldn't the righties have waited until it was a little closer to november to have max effect? Court Jester-Now you have me curious! What is the supporting evidence in the case against Bush being AWOL. I would love to have those juicy bits of info. Links books anything.

Gravatar John-

Seems pretty obvious to me, actually. Remember, Lieberman isn't a Republican (he's just a "useful idiot" to them, at least so far): i.e. the Repubs don't really care whether he wins or loses. No doubt, they would much rather have an actual (R) sitting in that seat in a Dem-leaning state, making it that much more likely that they would hold onto leadership positions in the Senate after November.

Look at it from the position/perspective of last Saturday night, not knowing who will win or lose. Revealing this information then _might_ swing the Dem primary (or might not). Lieberman pulls off a squeaker as a result, let's say. Lamont either drops out (likely, since he didn't have the incumbancy factor to lean on), or runs as an independent, likely with only a minor impact on November. Either way, the information is "used" at that point, and largely useless for setting up the kind of narrative that they've (the GOP) has been pushing for the last 24 hours or so, plus Lieberman, who for all his rhetoric still lines up on the (D) side of the aisle.

Given that as an alternative, it made perfect sense to hang on to the info at least until after the primary... and possibly longer, if Lieberman had won anyway... an Ace in the hole, as it were, to muddy the journalistic waters at some convenient time. In the current situation, it "supports" the narrative they badly want to push.

Hope that helps...

Gravatar Can you spot the differences in these two photos?

Gravatar Here is my problem guys.....and gals. I live in a place called Utah. Great place to live but the political debate here is really one sided. Very sterile. I dont have a problem with people who have a certain point of veiw (right or left). But for Pete's sake know why. I talk to so many Pro-Bush people here that are just sadly uneducated about the issues that we are faced with today. I moved here a few years ago from Boulder CO. An even better place to live but with the same problems. Too many people on the left who are there because everyone else is. They dont relly know why. Both of these groups I mention base their decisions on little more then emotion. I am a facts and figures kinda guy. I dont care what the answer is as long as its true. I simply want truth and its hard to find anymore. I am not here to stir the pot. Just looking for some good Socratic debate. From both sides! Finally found it Thanks!

Gravatar I hate to pop your balloons here, but you should never attribute malice to something that can be more easily explained by laziness.

Imagine you are a little GOP website welp who needs to whip up a banner with all of those Democrat faces. The fastest thing for you to do is to fire up Google image search and grab the first clean image of the Dean scream you can find.

You then resize it and put it on the page. Simple, quick, and easy, until someone gets bent out of shape about the smudge in the picture. A picture found on a blog entry made back in January 2004.

You may want to ask blogman or lordbyron or whoever where *he* got the picture from. I bet it was Karl Rove.

Gravatar Thanks MNS. I would think it would be more useful to do it closer to November 2nd then right now. If it was a con job they really blew the timing. In my opinion.

Gravatar Whoops, missed the update. Sorry. Carry on.

Gravatar I would tend to agree with sue on this one. It applies to the doctered photos coming out of the Middle East. We all know there are civilians being killed. So I think it is largely laziness or fear of going to the places where the real shots could be taken. Cooper Anderson has an interesting story about his experience trying to get a story in Lebenon on his blog. I would link to it but alas I dont know how.

Gravatar Hey, I posted your nice comparison on Reddit. Maybe you could post a little update so people can vote you up?

Gravatar qazplm
Just wanted to remind you guys of the talking points I kept hearing to defend Rather, and now Reuters. I agree that the GOP is partisan (by definition!), and wants to portray Dean as a Nazi. I also happen to think it's a slimy thing to do, and will hurt them more than it helps them.

Do you agree that CBS and Reuters are partisan?

Gravatar There are all kinds of people on the left who call Bush "Hitler". So I am curious why its such a big deal.

Point. The mustache-on-Bush meme was quite popular in 2004. The original intent was no doubt to emphasize the fascist leanings of many members of the Bush administration--although I'm sure there were plenty of liberals in Boulder who thought that this was just amusing as heck! If memory serves me correctly, Senator Kerry's sys admin requested that Kerry's supporters refrain from such juvenile displays, and took the links to these pictures down when they appeared on his blog.

The Republicans' more recent forays into photoshopped Hitler mustaches are no doubt more of the political juvenalia that passes for wittiness on Republican blogs. However, the more recent efforts seem linked to the short-lived attempts by Lieberman's supporters to paint those Dems who opposed him as anti-Semitic. Unfortunately, that's a difficult position to maintain when some of Joe's closest friends from the synagogue tell the media they're supporting Lamont.

The terror plot is a different can of worms, entirely. The date on the Muslim calendar that corresponds to August 22, 2006 is of historical significance to many in the Middle East. Of course the "technotards" that run Homeland defense didn't realize this until they discovered the wonderful world of blogging existed for more than the mere trafficking in left-wing-whacko ideas and Internet porn. Then the full horror of the situation hit them: "My god! The A-rabs have computers! THEY BLOG TOO!!!" If HD had known about the threat before August 8, you can bet they would have released the news. Unfortunately, the brain trust in charge is still trying to figure out the difference between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims.

Gravatar I guess now Dems and Repubs are Even
for the Condi Zombie eyes incident:
http://wdaserver.com/condieyes.jpg
However, only in one instance was the
loaded alteration sponsored by a major newspaper!

Gravatar dicktrick: So you're saying Condi doesn't really have white sclera on her eyeballs?

Gravatar Well, you know what they say: First one to call someone Hitler, loses.

Gravatar mm yea. that was back during the rosenberg trial amnd it was progressives who lost.

then i suppose moveon lost with the bush in 30 seconds video.

Gravatar WOW.

It really doesn't take long to tire of you people's "insight".

Get over it already.

RWR
www.rightwingrocker.com

Gravatar BTW,

Given the commonalities between Dean's socialist Democratic party and Hitler's NSDAP, even if someone photoshopped a Hitler-esque moustache on Dean, it would be more than appropriate.

RWR

Gravatar Oh, gosh! We've been found out! Quick toss the trolls in the convection oven and crank it up to CLEAN before the thought police get here!

Gravatar And there are a few thousand out there of photoshopped Hillary pictures, photoshopped Bush pictures, etc. Big deal.

Gravatar Hey, we are Bush supporters, we considered it an honor and a compliment to put that mustache on our Rove (dreaded be his name) mole Dean.

Just a little thank you for everything he has done for us. No insult intended, honest.

Gravatar So what? The Nutroots have been painting Hitler moustaches on Bush for years.

Poor widdle leftist nutbags. They are quick to label people "Nazis" but when someone dares throw it back at them they cry like little babies.

Gravatar Trust the nutty left to see Hitler mustaches where they don't exist. If anything, it looks like he has a little brown left over from being lovingly embraced between Moore's cheeks.

I'm saying that Dean tosses Moore's salad, btw. Which is much worse than a pic whose curves are adjusted to burn in shadows. Idiots.

Gravatar "And, for the record, the documents in the Dan Rather incident were never proven false. They simply could not be verified with sufficient certainty."

This is the definition of insanity, btw. I gotta get out of this nuthouse echo chamber.

Gravatar Uh, someone must of hacked your site and removed the Hitler mustache. But he looks well tanned. Maybe you can call that blackfaced.

Gravatar The original was apparently dirty. See http://images.search.yahoo.com/s...2&tt=2&ei=UTF- 8 and http://www.blogman.net/mt2/ archi...eangoesmad2.jpg

Are you going to get upset that the GOP site has "altered" the real original now to make it look *less* hitler-like? What a tempest in a teapot.

I believe this has been discussed on Kos now too. Will you update your blog with this information that you may have made an honest mistake so that people can decide for themselves or will you continue to push your opinion/lie?

Gravatar Okay, I wade back into the swamp once more. Found what appears to be the image source. Here's the google cache:

http://72.14.209.104/search?q=ca...cd=2& lr=lang_en

You can definitely see the chocolaty smudge that Moore left on Dean's sweatty upper lip.

The more I think about this whole tempest in a teapot, the more annoyed I get. For the last six years I don't think I've gone one single fucking day without hearing or reading some idiot refer to some politician in the GOP as Hitler. And now you shitbags are whining and crying about a shadow over that dick eating asshole Dean's lip? You have got to be kidding me. You fucking whiny crybabies. Don't you have something better to do, like go to a pro-hizbollah rally? Fucking Christ, you people annoy the SHIT out of me. Look, its right there in my pants. A big steamy pile of dung that you guys have just annoied right out of me. If I ever see any of you I'm gonna chuck it at your face, like a monkey at the zoo. Fucking dickless wonders.

Gravatar ...loverly. Nothing makes me hates the GOP more than elementary-school quality name-calling.

...sigh.
Darryl Pearce

You mean like "chimpy mcbushhitler?" Gosh, where have we heard that one? Maybe 12 dozen times in every lefty blog on the planet. Ya think?

Can I hate the Dems now?

Gravatar I dreamed that smudge was my fault from kicking his whiny face in. Aaaaaaa-YA!

Gravatar moptop, i'm intrigued by your theory that dean is a rove plant. is this your theory alone, or is it detailed in a kos diary or similar you can link to?

Gravatar Funny... I have an email from the GOP dated 8/9 that shows Dean without the mustache....

Gravatar Somewhere on the other side of the blogosphere, a member of al Qaeda--whose English grammar and syntax is better than that of most Republicans'--is laughing his ass off.

Gravatar You lefties are too funny! Your cheerleaders in the MSM get caught with their pants down with staged and photoshopped pro-terrorist images, and you respond by pointing out a -- GASP -- shadow on an image over Screaming Dean's lip that was quickly nixed by the GOP when they got wind of it.

Of course, not a peep out of you lefties about all the "ChimpHitler" stuff all over the nutroots. Hypocrisy is part and parcel of being a leftist, so no surprises here...

Gravatar Are you sure the GOP added the 'stache to Howie's mug? I'm thinking maybe his 'official' pics have his trademark liphair removed in a attempt to make him look credible.

Gravatar Are you sure the GOP added the 'stache to Howie's mug? I'm thinking maybe his 'official' pics have his trademark liphair removed in a attempt to make him look credible.

Gravatar Just google or yahoo Howard Dean and several images show up that were posted/uploaded on sites over a year ago!

I smell a big fat apology coming.
Or perhaps not because progressive are never wrong because its ok if you "feel" right.

Gravatar Trust the nutty left to see Hitler mustaches where they don't exist.

ah the trolls have arrived.

Actually I proved that it existed. I sent the proof to watertiger...... if you stack the 'clean' Dean photo and the old GOP.com Dean photo on top of each other in Photoshop and use the "difference" transfer mode to reveal any pixel differences, you can clearly see that someone altered the Dean photo. It's a lot more subtle than the Reuters photo 'touch-up' but it's there, clear as day.

Not that I expect facts and proof to make any difference to wingnuts.
