Why? Did dion suggest that he will be holding referendums on any issue, like Day did? I only ask because if he did not then your comparison falls pretty flat.

Geesh Anon - your comparison is idiotic. What does "holding referendums" have to do with Rick Mercer's idiotic petition.
Turnabout is truly fair play in this regard! Hee Hee

I have to agree with anon here.
The whole point of the Doris Day petition was to mock the Canadian Alliance's proposals for "democratic reform" which included a proposal to require by law that a referendum be held on any issue supported (through signatures on a petition) by 3% of the population. Critics pointed out that this proposal was idiotic, since special interest groups could easily get the signatures of 3% of Canadians for just about any whacky proposal. To prove it, This Hour has 22 Minutes set out to get 3% of Canadians to agree that a referendum be held to get Day to change his name, to resounding success.
Now, your new petition is all in fun, so it's no big deal of course (it's pretty funny actually), but it's hardly "turnabout". Unless Dion has suggested we enact a law to hold a referendum on any issue garnering the support of 3% of Canadians. And I'm pretty sure he hasn't. Which just goes to show that at least one person was paying attention to what the whole "Doris Day" satire was actually all about, and learned something from it.
