I always wanted to visit the Soviet Union. Crime didn't exist when the Communists were in charge. Similar situation in Iraq too. It could be argued that dictatorships work. If you don't like it, go live somewhere else.
St Petersburg looks lovely in winter.
I can't contemplate visiting there now, though. Organised trips under the old Soviet regimes were the order of the day, but I was too young.
Darren - interestingly, I thought that about crime not existing under Communism.
Until I visited a school in Prague earlier in the year. Although now an International School, it was a local school until a few years ago.
I was amazed that all the furniture, and all the science equipment was bolted down, and every single door had 2 locks on it. It was explained to me that, when it was a local school, if things weren't bolted down and behind double-locked doors (only the most senior teaching staff were allowed both keys, junior staff had only one key and required a colleague to be present with their key to gain access to a room), they disappeared.
I had quite a long chat with a teacher who had worked in TEFL in Eastern European countries for years, who told me a lot of very surprsiing things.
It had never occurred to me that there was no crime because there were no opportunites for crime. It wasn't the 'threat' of what 'They''d do to you if you were caught, it was more that there was no physical way you could do anything.
