Dave,
For what it's worth: I don't visit your website because of the graphics. I visit it because I think that you're a serious apologist who puts a lot of thought and effort into your work.
Regardless of whether or not I like the ads, I am willing to scroll past them to get to the meat of your work.
Keep it up.

Just wanted to say that I get your blog's feed, so I normally don't see the ads. However, I don't find them overbearing, as I know it's how you make a living. God bless you.

Just to echo what Rusty said. Your main priority is the support of your family; so its only fitting that they would come first.

I think it might be more effective if you did it like Mark Shea. He limits his appeals to 1 week spurts 4 times a year. If the adds are there all the time you tend to ignore them.

I don't like the begging routine. That ain't for me. Right now my task is to do some serious advertising: a much bigger pool of people who see my book ads. I'm taking steps to get the ball rolling on that.
Plus, the ad on top is geared towards someone who doesn't come very often. I assume the regulars will skip over it. If they want to buy books they will, because they already know about it.

Ads? There are ads on this page? I thought it was all part of the cult phenomenon! :P

From Josh's blog:
Josh:
I don't see how I "lied," Dave. From the top of your page to the top of the first blog post is more than three full screens of ads and other junk, at least on my 1024x768 monitor.
ME:
There is now a temporary ad (two months) for someone else. That ain't mine. The lie was in your typically stupid statement (where I am concerned) that I would take no advice, and take everything personally. I now have followed your advice, twice. Smaller book images; smaller ad altogether . . .
On my monitor MY ad takes up a screen and a half at the most [well, maybe two]. Big wow.

I would not call it a lie. More like inadequately verifying your statement. If you are going to say a website has X and you have not been there in a few months it is proper for you to verify that it has not been changed in the meantime. It would have only taken him a few seconds. Still it isn't a lie because he thought it was true. I can't imagine he would say it if he knew it wasn't true. You are sure to correct him and everyone can easily verfiy who is right.

The lie was precisely that I can't take any advice and take everything personally: a sweeping statement that he didn't even bother to verify; but it is a lie in any event. Josh regularly lies about me; about my apostolate, interior states of mind, qualifications, etc. This is nothing new. He's a disciple of Luther (I mean in how he acts, not theologically), who did that quite a bit too when talking about Catholics.

I've also criticized the site design here for the same reasons, but I subscribe to the feed so guess what? No ads. No more complaint. If only more people would learn to subscribe to RSS feeds, the blogosphere would be a much simpler place.
