Gravatar Dave, Please look at Decentfilms.com and add Stephan Greydanus's commentary on Harry Potter compared to LotR. It is a very intellegent.

As for me and mine. My children are free to read Harry Potter, after they turn 21.

Gravatar Is it pro or con? Could you just give us the link for this combox? Thanks!

Gravatar Thanks.

SDG, w/out condemning HP, points out that there are real differeces between LotR and HP magic. He outlines (7?) "hedges" that protect the reader of LotR from becomming magic obsessed.

Nevertheless, I cannot imagine a more influencial text in the modern D&D, elfin, magic world. At least til HP.

I haven't read more than the 1st book of HP so my op matters little but, from the 1st page of LotR I found good and evil clearly delineated. I must only wonder about the rest of HP.

I just used all of todays tme off to write this (from myphone) so reading the balance of HP is not in my near future. meanwhile my children will go "potterless" for the forceable future.
