Isn't this the classic Rove tactic, attack from your weakest position? To claim that the administration thought it improper to push for a war vote just prior to an election because it would unfairly politicize the issue is hilarious. It is the Rove/Bush signature move, the dirty trick that has been orchestrated ahead of every congressional election since 2002. Are we supposed to be distracted by the mendacity of such a claim?

So...finally got registered at the new FDL but it took forever. Since I didn't read the book salon choice I will be hanging here so as not too look illiterate.

We shall see Diva... I'd like to think it's just that simple certainly. I'm not sure I like the idea that FDL has gotten so effete and elitist that only pre-approved personages are allowed to read and/or comment there, but not until after they've registered, put their first born in secure hock and signed the FDL loyalty oath.
Registration is for anal-retentive, bubble-dwelling assholes of the MSM. Not for blogs. But like I said, I'll take a wait and see attitude until I see what real changes they've made. Right now I don't like the sound of it and I certainly don't like that for whatever reason, I am being prevented from reading a blog that I have actually contributed to in the past.

I'm sure I'm being overly sensitive but I'm not a big fan of exclusion of any kind and I don't react well to it. My guess is that they are just working out bugs as they roll over to a new format. FDL is hosted by the same servers that C&L is hosted and I know C&L is also planning a re-vamp of it's site. I'm all for change but I'm just hoping that they are not getting overly discriminatory.
I guess I should just wait until I can actually get into the website to see what changes they've made before I judge them for it I suppose. I'm just frustrated is all.

I think you are right..As Jane gets more visibility, I am sure FDL is and will get hammered with trolls. I have been seeing it recently with one time screen names' usually concern trolls.
seriously, Nate - don't take it personally - bringing anything new online is always a pain in the ass disaster... if it gets resolved, more or less, this week, all will be forgiven, I'm sure... I'm guessing a month for everything to be running like clockwork.
It's is a big, awful project, but I'm sure better to get it done now than in the thick of the election season.

Have you had time to read the Kris paper yet? It seems to me, based on one quick read, to be a balanced and responsible effort. If nothing else, it's a priceless compendium of FISA legislative history materials.
And I think that he finally does get to the heart of the problem on about page 41. The whole FISA paradigm has been ovverrun by technology. We need to fundamentally rethink our approach to gathering electronic communications information, and do so in a way that balances two inherently contradictory interests, i.e., security and privacy.
I am a long way from sorting out my thoughts on the subject into anything remotely resembling a coherent package, but the first thing that occurs to me is that if it's no longer possible to draw meaningful distinctions based on what kind of communication it is or where it is harvested, then the only meaningful distinction left is who is a party to the communication. That at least leads you to a realatively administrable, sorta bright line rule: if one is a "person" within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment, then none of their communications can be harvested without a warrant issued by a "neutral and detached magistrate" and based on probable cause as that term has historically been understood in Fourth Amendment law. Conversely, if one is not a "person" within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment, then you have no privacy interest vis-a-vis the U.S. government, unless the U.S. and the country of which you are a citizen or resident have agreed by treaty to give you some.
I'm not yet saying that what I've just described is the right rule, only that it is one possible rule. I'm wide open to consideration of alternatives.

I've seen companies killed by botched ERP implementations. Hopefully the "upgrades" won't have the same effect on FDL.
One thing I discovered at FDL is that my old registration "stuck" at the new site. I tried to register "msmolly" and got a message that the name was taken. So I tried another and my email addy and was told that email address was in use by another user. So I tried just logging in (at the top) and got right in.
Must be cookies. But if you're having trouble, you might just try logging in without registering.
Meanwhile, I'm sorta liking it over here right now.

I guess I better tell TRex that I love the white on black. It keeps the screen from being so bright. I increased the size of the font - Control + - that's Control and hit the plus sign.
Very comfortable reading with slightly larger letters and no glare.

Hi TRex and TheraPups. For you Firepups it has been a long day over there but I think they are getting it sorted. I could not log on and had to create a sock puppet to get on to find out, but it all worked in the end. The registration is not exclusionary, I think it's just to make the mods' lives easier.
Anyway - good post TRex, Rove is up to his old tricks, surely everyone is over him by now.

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. I started the log in process around noon, sat and waited 5 minutes or so then decided to start putting up some decorations. I got lights strung in three windows, and checked again. It had gone to the profile page so I filled that out and then got all the inflatables out of the attic and sorted extension cords. I'd say all together it took over an hour. But at least I got some stuff accomplished.
