I agree the volume of communication online is soaring but as new technology/sites are added to the ways we can stay in touch, staying in touch is becoming ever more time consuming. I'm not sure we're quite there yet but something is going to have to give in terms of how people manage their communications. One audience you didn't mention as potential aggregator of the information is online ad networks. If they could come with a platform consumers could use to manage their communications, think about the potential for behavioral targeting. Scary and insightful all at the same time.

From recent focus groups I've done with 20 to 30 year olds, there seems to be definite "social networking fatigue".

I agree with all of you; I closed down my Myspace page months ago.
Where I've really seen social networking catching recent traction is in silo communities. People realize this is where they should play online, and they are.
Who cares what my friends are blogging about in Myspace - I want to know what are PR 2.0 bloggers saying, given I'm a PR guy?
A semantic web 3.0 style would send us to relevant sites/content but can that really happen or is it a pipe dream?
