I can't speak for Sara, but those pictures were apparently taken while on the government dime. Just like NASA, that means they belong to us.
Withholding them to avoid bad press (no matter how bad it is) is the start of a slippery slope that leads to not announcing any breaking of the law by the federal government or any (even accidental) deaths caused by government action.

I seem to recall once upon a time that the fact that Saddam Hussein's administration had met with, dismissed, and broke ties with an al Qaeda terrorist was enough to brand Saddam Hussein as a terrorist, and therefore worthy of deposition by invasion and occupation.

We assume that abortion clinics will be under threat of bombing, because that's just How It Is. We assume that we'll hear about creation myths being taught as science in schools because that's just How It Is.

But something about ethnic cleaning bears mention, in this thread particularly.
When you're engaged in ethnic cleansing, you don't need all that much precision or controllability from your line troops. Armed thugs do just fine, the more brutal the better. You're not tying to achieve a strictly military result; you're trying to send a message: "leave, and stay gone".
When you want to create a climate of fear, the same fairly broad standard for your line troops applies. They need not be able to achieve anything like close coordination or be able to hit specified targets. All they have to do is kill and maim more or less at random, so long as they target the right population. The less predictable, the better.
What that means is that drunken psychopathic murderers like the Phineas Priests work just fine.
It also means that the current slow-burn has close to optimal structure. All the enemy needs to be do is ramp it up.

Twenty years ago a few men per year threw their careers away for a 16-year-old girl. Now hardly a week goes by without a FEMALE teacher going to prison because of her inability to keep her hands off male students in her charge. The youngest I have read of was 12.

First, the whole "White race" thing. There is no White or Black or Asian or any other race as a biological concept. We're all one species, which is why "miscegenation" is not only possible, but actually desirable in the grand scheme of things, otherwise you end up like for example the Amish, having to deal with a high rate of strange genetic diseases in your offspring because you're choosing your mate from such a small gene pool.
You see the same thing to a lesser extent with other insular ethnic groups, for example Ashkenazi Jews and Tay-Sachs disease, to pick the one group that Bob is most obsessed with. I guess they didn't have a strategy in their master ZOG plan to control the Universe from a bunker deep in the Earth's core, or whatever variation of the Grand Conspiracy that you choose to believe in, to deal with the consequences of genetic inbreeding over time.
And this "Babylonian Talmudic" medieval Judaism is something you're afraid of, yet want to emulate with your own narrow-minded, illusory genetic inbreeding experiment. By all means, go to Iceland and be with the palest people you can find so that you can raise a master race of transparent people. Your offspring will be unable to survive outside below a latitude of about 60 deg. N without covering themselves in SPF 70 sunscreen first, but if that's your idea of ultimate perfection of a race, who am I to tell you otherwise?
If there is a big conspiracy in this country, it goes by the name of corporatism and power politics in the status quo. See The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein for a particularly frightening (yet completely documented) telling of this narrative. Of course Bob might not like that book since it happens to be written by a Canadian who I believe is Jewish but don't really care to check since it's so irrelevant to the story for a non-hater such as myself.
A popular example of this is Walmart. That is one of the most rapacious, penny-pinching, soul-crushing (for employees at least) companies out there, and it was founded by a guy who's about as White and Protestant as you can get. There's no Jewish conspiracy behind it. Hell, there's not even a Chinese conspiracy behind it. Walmart exists as a consequence of greed as a part of human nature, and the system that is set up such that the greedy and motivated types tend to become most successful, and tend to do things to keep other people down.
I don't understand why Bob thinks his pale skin gets him anything in this country. I work as a programmer and the race of my coworkers is completely irrelevant. Where they grew up might give them an accent that's easier or more difficult for me to understand, but that's a minor point and completely unrelated to "race". Same with whether they're Jewish or Hindu or atheist or whatever. Everyone has a heritage that gives them certain values and beliefs, and those who are secure in their own (or perhaps in the values that they adopted later in life), need not fear the existence of other people with a slightly different heritage.
The vast majority of Americans, I firmly believe, would prefer that we be more colorblind, not less, so Bob is fighting a losing battle in popular opinion and blaming it on the Jews, etc., rather than admit that the rest of us stand with the ideals of Martin Luther King and all the other civil rights leaders who envisioned a world where people would not be judged by the color of their skin. By and large, we simply don't buy into his illusions that "race" exists as anything more than a societal construct based on the history of individual groups of people and genetic drift over time based on culture and geography that shouldn't stand in the way of being tolerant to each other even when we disagree.
It's not worth arguing any further with someone who's so twisted around that he's "not even wrong." Great post as always, Sara. It's sad that the circumstances are such that you have to write about them (thus attracting those who share such odious beliefs to try to defend them).
For anyone who actually follows these things, the official right-wing line is that von Brunn was a left-winger. Their logic, as I understand goes somewhat as follows:

This thread and the blog entry that spawned it remind me of what Mrs. Robinson was telling us a while back about Prof. Altemeyer's book "The Authoritarians." We often find in politics leaders and followers, and the people in each of these two groups have personality traits that complement the other group's role. The dynamic he describes is worth considering in this struggle to prevent more bloodshed.
The Right-Wing Authoritarian followers have been measured as having difficult with critical thinking, a tendency toward "us-versus-them" perception, and following the leader because he is the leader and doing so even when he is leading them off a cliff. They are prone to suspicions and the Paranoid Style in American politics. Their understanding of the world is unfalsifiable and immune to counter-evidence. Witness the current troll. But less-extreme people with similar problems abound. We even know some of them in the real world.
The leaders are similar, but less docile. They are motivated by a drive for high social dominance, sometimes verging on sociopathy. They are even harder to get through to than their followers. I think some of the folks here are right that they will not back down or reveal their goals (or their goal-less opportunism).
So here we have a problem with Sara's call. The leaders will not and can not, by themselves, scale back their drive for control. To the degree that it is possible, the followers have to see their leaders as a problem and stop following their orders. It sometimes happens. They don't become saints, but they do stand aside, reducing the number of active footsoldiers. Mrs. R wrote about this in her "Cracks in the Wall" and "Tunnels and Bridges" posts, which are permanently linked in the left column on the main Orcinus page.
I'm assuming that Mrs. R's recent blog posting, asking conservatives if they really want another civil war, is directed to the Conservative Movement's base just as much as it is to the leadership. *Maybe* the lack of an answer from the talking heads, or a series of non-denial denials, will get the regular people wondering if they might want to slow down and look where they're headed. They might then decide to stop running toward that cliff.
So, Mrs. R: Are there ways we can bring up your challenge to our conservative family-members and neighbors, without making them become defensive? This would include conversations over dinner or during Fourth of July picnics. Do we put it in the context of what the bloviators seem to want, and avoid asking our friend directly if they want war? Or should we be more direct?

But this post mentioned art, which happened to be on my mind, because I just finished watching the documentary, My Kid Could Paint That. A movie which shows how absurd modern American society has truly become.
First, many of you are misunderstanding my general thesis about Western Culture. The question isn't is it better. The point is that it is unique, and the descendants of the people who created it have a right to make the decisions regarding it, from inside the protection of their own power structure.
Art in Western Civilization makes an enormous shift when the Zionists rise to power, and this is no coincidence.
When Zionists have the power to shift standards in what is beauty, or what represents talent in art, through their control of the media and via museums like the Guggenheim, they also have the power to redefine other things...namely the law.
If I can make you think a glob of blue paint surrounded by four squiggly black lines represents a beautiful woman, then what can my control over the media NOT make you think?
The same people who want you to re-interpret long-standing, clearly defined standards of talent and beauty as represented through art, might also want you to re-interpret the definition of words like "Congress shall make no law", or "The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
I keep coming back to this point, and so far NO ONE, not one single person has been able to refute it. So again I will ask it...

It is easy to score "points", and "win" arguments when you both ask and answer your own loaded questions. You've engaged in a logical fallacy known as the straw man.
If you would have simply asked me the question, and allowed me to answer it for myself, and speaking for SOME other White Civil Rights Activists, then you would have received the following answer.
Absolutely I have considered the plight of the Native Americans in relationship to my own situation. In fact it was when I realized White people are today being treated WORSE than the Native Americans, that I began to WAKE UP and realize something is very, very wrong in America.
Comparing and contrasting the two situations...
The Native Americans were running approximately 4,000 years behind their European rivals, having not yet even reached the Bronze Age in terms of weapons technology. On a side note, several Jews accompanied Columbus on his first voyage, so they should share complicity in what occurred during the conquest of the New World as much as any Spaniard, Italian, French or Englishman.
The primary difference between the 400-year-genocide of the North American Native, and the 400-year-genocide of the White race and Western Civilization, in which we are roughly at the halfway point, is that everyone knew the former was taking place, while no one seems to realize that latter is well underway.
I doubt the Natives ever stood a chance. Had all the tribes settled their differences at least long enough to attack and destroy each and every European colony upon its initial founding, they still wouldn't have been able to keep up with weapons technology.
Eventually too many ships, with too many cannons and muskets would have arrived in a single place for even combined Native tribes to force retreat.
But beyond all that, look how we treat Native Americans after the genocide. They have reservations where they are charge of the preservation of the culture, and where they are exempt from many state and federal laws.

Your analogy makes no sense. We don't observe dogs talking or have a posteriori knowledge of dogs speaking to humans and telling them what to do. Making it as hard as possible? How so? Be specific. Do you interpret any gun control measures to be "as hard as possible?" I don't know about you but where I live (Kansas) I would have no problem purchasing a gun. As a matter a fact I own one.
If I thought political participation would do much of anything, I would be more active than I am. (As it is, I vote and occasionally blog about some of my concerns.) But I don't think it does.
Someone above asked bob about what rights are being denied, and I'll be specific - I think the right to petition is severely curtailed de facto by politicians who do not read constituents' letters and leave it to their aides to send out form letters in response to the vast majority.
Another thing that concerns me about legislation is the fact that congress members often don't bother to read a bill before voting on it - which is something that should be mandatory.

The father of the man arrested on suspicion of making threatening phone calls to Palo Alto's JCC apologized this week for his son's actions.
"As his parent, I feel some obligation to express remorse and an apology about this," said Michael O'Keeffe, whose son, Kevin Riley O'Keeffe, was arrested last Friday on charges related to leaving three threatening phone messages over the past two months.
The arraignment was set for Wednesday.
"I could see it coming. There were definite signs," his father said Wednesday. "My son was making a lot of statements about minority groups and he had mentioned Jews in particular a couple of times."
The senior O'Keeffe, a maintenance mechanic in San Jose, said his politically conservative son believed many "liberal agendas are sponsored by Jews."
The third call for which Kevin O'Keeffe is charged was received Wednesday of last week at the Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto. The call hailed the shooting at an L.A.-area JCC the day before.
Still, even with O'Keeffe in custody, ALSJCC officials are moving forward with plans to beef up security.
"It's not something that's going to become a temporary measure, but something that will become ongoing and permanent," said Sanford Blovad, the center's executive director.
He described the security push as responding in equal measure to the JCC shooting and the hate calls.
The center is characterized by open, accessible spaces that will need to be closed off, Blovad said. The ALSJCC leases its space from the city of Palo Alto and has begun meeting with city officials to discuss options.
At recent open membership meetings, security has been a central topic of discussion.
"The essential element woven through is that security has to go to the front burner and remain on the front burner," Blovad said. "People are very saddened by it, but it's a direct reflection of our society as a whole."
O'Keeffe was taken into custody while on duty at Affymax Research Institute in Santa Clara last week. Several hours later, officers searched the 28-year-old's San Jose home.
According to Lieutenant Alana Forrest, police found "hate literature, several books, magazines, pamphlets, stickers, all regarding the National Alliance or the National Vanguard," a fast-growing neo-Nazi group and its publication, respectively.
O'Keeffe was charged with three misdemeanor counts of threatening phone calls, two felony counts of terrorist threats and one felony count of a civil rights violation.
Investigators were able to catch O'Keeffe through Pacific Bell phone records. The ALSJCC contacted the phone company to have the threatening calls traced.
The calls caused "considerable stress," Blovad said. "The damage he did was psychological more than anything."
Each of the three calls was left on the ALSJCC's answering machine after the receptionist left in the evening and before she arrived the next morning. On advice of the district attorney, Blovad could not disclose the exact nature of the calls but said "they were clearly hatred against the Jews."
The suspect's father said he is bothered by his son's actions.
"People, I think, would naturally assume I have similar views," he said. "My views are totally the opposite."
Michael O'Keeffe said his son had expressed some remorse for his actions since being arrested.
"He seems to be remorseful that he made threats. He said he would never really hurt anyone. He said he still has a lot of ill feelings about certain groups."
Earlier this year, a swastika was painted on the Palo Alto institution. No one has been arrested in that case.
Meanwhile, a threatening phone call was made on July 14 to Keddem Congregation, a Reconstructionist synagogue in Palo Alto. Forrest said police are trying to determine whether O'Keeffe made that call as well.

Okay - speaking as a professional military man, the thought of people, of whatever political stripe, armed with modern firearms and not even trained gives me the willies. There's a reason why the various military and police forces of the world place such an emphasis on proper, safe use of weapons. I also have seen, too many times, yahoos with absolutely no clue whatsoever about weapon safety running around loose with what are essentially civilian versions of infantry weapons.
Second, you refer to "emergency situations". What's wrong with being pro-active and taking care of your weapon purchases and training before an emergency arises? Fail to plan, plan to fail - or, as I have told my junior personnel any number of times, "Prior planning prevents piss-poor performance."

Obviously. I was saying that despite this, I support these laws because if it is going to come to that, most people will be prepared enough in advance, and will have the benefit of being able to operate the thing without blowing off their own fingers.

First, let's assume that things are as bad as per your hypothetical. In such a general semi-anarchistic state, I seriously doubt it'll be much trouble to simply get a gun via, er, "foraging", or a "black market" springing up following the breakdown of law and order. If a group of radicals are able to roam the streets killing political and racial enemies, I don't think the gun regulatory system is still going to be functioning. Savvy?

It's just an observation/guess on my part, but my experience is that a lot of guys in the right-wing gun culture have had enough interactions with the law -- usually small-scale stuff like drunk driving, domestic disturbance, firearms ownership issues, and so on, the kind of thing that gets you fines and a year of probation -- that raising the ownership bar would effectively render them ineligible for a permit.
We've noted here before that they often express the fear that "women will take away our guns" -- which happens, particularly where they've been through nasty divorces that involved domestic violence, mandated anger-management, and so on. At some point in this process, some judge usually revokes their right to own guns -- an event that gets blamed on their ex-wives, who have committed an ultimate act of emasculation.
So they feel far more threatened by the idea of stricter gun laws than the rest of us do. They'd probably be the first ones to lose them under almost any conceivable change in the rules.

It might be time to update the readership -- including those who disagree with us -- about what civil wars are like these days. I get the impression that most of us American readers think of the U.S. Civil War of the 1860's. But what other examples are more fitting for the current age?
And I wouldn't limit the examples to obvious civil wars. The Troubles in Northern Ireland might be an example of civil war in all but name. How about the Kansas War of the 1850's?
The less people envision old assumptions of standardized uniforms and rows of soldiers and clearly-delineated battles, the more they will realize that such a disaster could be very very messy, amorphous, and confusing.

I've often argued here that the general conservative panic about "family values" and social control is a response to the very real problems they face that you just don't see in the same concentration in the blue areas of the country. Meth, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, drinking -- you name it, they've got more of it. It's a slow-motion train wreck; and since Reagan ripped up their safety net, nobody except the church and the white nationalists are giving them the least bit of "assistance" in dealing with it.
As for scrapes with the law: I don't know what your picture of me looks like, but you need to tear it up and start over. I doubt you have fewer than zero, which is my current score. Upper-middle-class, middle-aged white ladies are pretty much invisible to cops. Not even a traffic ticket on my record at present. It's been years.

Because as a military man presumably with firearms training, you must know that a semi-automatic .223 "civilian version" of an "infantry weapon" is functionally the same as a semi-automatic .223 hunting rifle—and no more or less powerful or deadly.

I'm talking about people who support gun control; people who don't like guns; are afraid of guns; people with no interest in owning guns. And yeah, if you poll people, most liberals will say that they support the right to private gun ownership—in theory. In practice, they only support it as long as it's not a black rifle that looks scary, not a handgun, doesn't hold more than 5 rounds, is registered, locked up on one side of your house with the ammo locked in a chest in your attic, and as long as you don't live in any of the major population centers where liberals actually live.
But other than that, yeah, they TOTALLY support private ownership of firearms.

Um... I think the difference is almost certainly the use of "pro-gun/anti-gun".
IME, what I see on the part of most, "liberals hate gun owners" is a lack of blanket support for ready access to almost everything.
Me... I think of myself as pro-gun, but am usually lumped with the anti-gun crowd by those who call themselves "pro".
Why? Because I have no problem with waiting periods, real background checks and a favor a "will grant" system of licensing; by means of a skills test (as with driving).
No kept records of who owns what. No problem with magazine capacity. Moderate problem with trivial ability to gain carry permits.
I'd like to be able to afford Class 3 weapons, because I think they are fun. I think having more armed people on the streets is a bit of a menace to public safety.
As to confirmation bias... the, "more regular interaction" you think you engage is precisely why I think it's confirmation bias (which is the function of the mind to recall things which support a worldview, and discount those which don't. The more time one spends in "the wild" the more one tends to suffer from this, unless an active effort is made to control for it).

Perhaps those "conservatives" who favor gun control measures you don't, don't inhabit those fora because they feel less welcome in them. I don't think you can. I've said torture is bad, moderation of comments are good, and not all liberals are anti gun. I've said things which make it fairly plain where I stand on labor issues.
None of that will give you certain knowledge of my specific stance on abrtn, freedom of the press, religion, assembly, the 4th/5th/8th/9th amendments.
To leap to conclusions about that is to assume facts not in evidence. I very much doubt I'd be pegged as a member of the Republican Party fro 1985 (the year I attained franchise) to Feb. 2008 (when I decided I no longer had any chance of having any say in whom that party ran for national office). Nor yet that I never cast a vote for a candidate who ended up in the Oval Office until Nov. 2008.
None of us is all of a piece, and to take a comment on a hot-button issue, and extrapolate from it, is a recipe for blinkered awareness.
(for what it's worth, I own several guns, and a lot of cutlery. I was in the army fr 16 years and spent more time thani care to think of with an M-16 in my sleeping bag, on my shoulder, or at the ready. More than once TDY money was spent to get a firearm I wanted, but didn't have the regular budget for).

I am somewhat chagrined, as I referred to myself as a "Jeffersonian Democrat," which has been spoiled now by a previous poster.

This is a good time to read history to the time before the American Civil War. There were people referred to as the "fire-breathers," a scattering of small and contemptible people who were eager to start the fighting, as long as somebody else did the dying. Their rhetorical skills far overmatched their character, for they were recklessly eager to set in motion a process which would become unstoppable, which would lead to the suffering and death of their fellow American citizens.
The fire-eaters were broadly admired by those whose oratorical skills did not match their aggression and hate. They were eager to slip the bonds of civilization, and kill another man, but only needed the flimsiest excuse to do so.
Yes, there are those who want a civil war. But to a man (or woman), none of them are the sorts who are brave enough to actually fight. They are cowards who leave the dying to someone else.

With 90+million gunowners in this country, all we have to do is take at least one with us and we'll win. I forget the exact number of the total of all military and law enforcement combined but it's less than 10% of the number of gunowners.
So, if I was able to take 2 or 3 or 4, we'd win sooner.

"When they come to take my guns, I will die." That much is a given. What is rather sad is the patriot myth that "they" will come marching up the street in column order to knock on your door and take your weapons, one at a time.
The Patriot Myth is an opiate. Untrained Militias require at least a 5:1 numerical advantage over combat troops. One does not attempt to disarm an active, fixed enemy. Just turn off the water and cut off the food for a few weeks, unleash some non-lethal CBW, and see what happens. The Patriot Myth is dependent upon whether "they" fight nice or not. They won't.
Guav: Did you notice the discussion of Lautenberg? That's a "gun control" question, and it's being discussed.
Terry, I read all 142 comments waiting for "liberals discussing guns." There aren't any—not even you in that discussion. What we see is liberals discussing whether or not being on the Terrorist Watch List/No Fly List should be grounds for denying citizens not accused of any crimes to be treated like criminals and be stripped of rights, one of which could potentially be gun ownership.
Are there any specific comments in there you'd like me to focus on? Because I'm not seeing what I think you wanted me to see.
That quite clearly is not, and was specifically not intended to be, a liberal discussion about gun control and gun ownership. I suspect if you find such a discussion, it's not going to present the "liberals are generally fine with private gun ownership and discuss it calmly and rationally" scenario that you're trying to show me.
I'll be happy to be proven wrong, however.
Ok... if you think that a bunch of people agreeing the Lautenbeg Amendment is ipso facto bad, and probably unconsitutional, doesn't count as discussing gus, their access and the right to own keep them, then I don't know what you are looking for, other than someone to toe the party line of the NRA that any restriction on the part of the state is unjustified.
Because I was saying Lautenberg's removal of firearms rights on the basis of a misdemeanor conviction was wrong. So I'd say I was talking about guns.
Your mileage ovbiously varies.
First of all, I would EXPECT liberals to be opposed to the Lautenberg amendment—the issue under discussion in that thread is whether or not the frequently arbitrarily-constructed Terrorist Watch List is a valid guideline for treating people like convicted felons and denying them rights and due process (as opposed to just, like, watching them).
Secondly, no, I don't consider that to be a discussion of the gun issue in general, and neither does the person who posted it, since they specifically asked people NOT to discuss gun control/gun rights. Which is why nobody does.
Third, I've already said I don't consider you anti-gun, so once again, I'm not surprised that you're not railing against firearms there, just as you're not railing against them here.
