Gravatar Well, we do live in an age which sees Roy Hattersley and David Marquand as left-wing radicals, so it's not surprising really.

Gravatar Very true Chris!

John Monks has been rattling the sabres with New Labour for some time to his credit...Not lighting molotovs, but including a few sharp phrases for politicians in New Labour. I don't think many other TUC GS have been so critical after leaving the post though I do stand to be corrected

He hasn't embraced a leftist position, but as Leader of the ETUC he will have to face off with other Govts on the right which have threatened union power, eg, Germany, Holland, etc. He can't be a moderate with so many unions in Europe under attack, particularly with the passing of the service directive.

Gravatar "Partnership with who?" - With Whom! If he can't even get his cases right what chance dealing with Capitalism...?

Gravatar Should capitalism really be capitalised Red Deathy?

Gravatar Arse.

Gravatar Monks moves to the left and Osler moves to the right. Who cares?

Gravatar Fair point Dave.
What struck me about the speech was that Monks seemed to have abandoned his former restraint. I was trying (gently) to suggest to FT readers that this was significant. There has been a muted but not hostile reaction so far. Maybe all the other readers are too busy doing deals to get too upset about this sort of criticism.

Gravatar It was a good piece Stefan. But trade union leaders can give it a good deal more verbal welly than Monks did.

Do you really think it is that significant? I'm sure Monks' sentiments are not untypical among TU top brass.

But in Britain anyway, I can't see many unions ready to get more militant.

Gravatar Yes indeed. But I don't need to tell you how difficult it is for unions to take effective industrial action these days. The Woodley "fight back" rhetoric may win some applause but it doesn't change very much on the ground. I always thought that Rodney Bickerstaffe had the stature and potential to lead a sustained campaign against the government, but he had no desire (probably wisely) to play Arthur Scargill to Blair's neo-Maggie act!
