While I am not able to contribute hard cash at the moment (but payday's not too far off!) I will assure you that *your* need for employment will be remembered in my daily rosary, as well as *our* need for your wonderful blog to continue!

John, thank you so much. I'm very grateful for your prayers and for those of other readers, friends, and family (note: readers are friends in my book) during this time of transition. I have no doubt that they help.

If you feel like looking beyond the east coast, I work for a small-town daily in Moses Lake, Washington, which is kind of like a Norman Rockwell scene with rodeos, if you can picture that. E-mail me if you want me to pass your resume on to my editor. I don't know if there's much open in the budget right now, but I know we could certainly use you.
The money's not impressive by NY standards, but the cost of living is low enough that it's possible to live on one paycheck here, and even raise a family. (One of the benefits to living in a farming community.) And I even know some single, Christian men I could introduce you to.
If you think I'm trying to lure you to the boonies, you're right. I think you'd be happy in a place where "Republican" isn't a dirty word, and there are no abortion clinics. Besides, think how cute you'd look in a cowboy hat. :)

Regarding that last comment. If you could figure out how to do it over the web, you could piece together a living copyediting a bunch of small weeklies. There's one here, a conservative Christian weekly trying to be an alternative to the liberal daily. It's about 20 pages a week, maybe six or seven pages of original content, with obvious mistakes on every page, which hurts their credibility. They couldn't afford a full-time copy editor, but I don't think it would take more than a few hours a week to edit the whole paper. What are your rates like?
A while back I came across a website for Dan Greenberg Editorial Services. He's an Arkansas justice of the peace, also doing freelance editing and writing. IIRC, his resume included researcher at the Heritage Foundation. His website doesn't appear to be online anymore. Maybe it's on the Wayback Machine. It had a lot of detail about the services he offered, how he priced his work, how he dealt with clients.
I found this while looking for Greenberg. There's an service called Elance where you can bid for all kinds of freelance jobs including editing and proofreading.
God bless you in your search.

Dawn - I understand with the hatred floating around the web why you wouldn't want snail mail to your home - do you have a PO box to send checks - I don't do PayPal.

Don't forget to ask your spouse if he or she has a pledge-matching program (mine did). I'm looking forward to getting my Dawn Patrol totebag in the mail.

Cathy, thanks for asking. I'll e-mail you my snailmail address.
Brett, pledge-matching--LOL. I don't have a tote bag, but I have lots of my New York Post business cards I'd be happy to send.
LCP, thanks for the tips. I'd forgotten about Elance. The idea of copyediting a number of smaller papers could be good if I turn out to be unemployed for a long time. In the short term, I'm concentrating on looking for a full-time job, and doing freelance writing and copyediting assignments as they come in (rather than making an effort to assemble a full-time schedule of freelancing).
Joel, I have a 45 on tape by a group called Moses Lake, from Moses Lake back in '68. They're good--produced by my hero Curt Boettcher. Thanks so much for the offer. I'd consider it if it weren't for my inability to drive. (My depth perception isn't great due to a lazy eye, though I see well enough with correction.) Wish I could go--you make it sound very appealing. And I love the Pacific Northwest.

Oh, you city girls! Driving is optional in a small town, unless you live out in the country. And even for those who do drive, this is the sort of place where three cars at a light is considerd a traffic jam. Hard for urbanites to imagine. :)
BTW, the band you're thinking of would be more commonly known as The Bards. They still get together occasionally. I think a couple of them are still in town.

I note above that you'd consider accepting tips via snail-mail ... my signature, "uncle jim", is based on my relationship to a nephew named dennis of vita mea ... rather than putting out your snail-mail address to me unknown, would you trust me to ask dennis for it? Perhaps you can 'ok' me to him via e-mail. Anything we can do to assist you and keep the blogs coming seems to me to be worthwhile. For guidance, I read 2Cor 8:12-15.

In the interest of full disclosure, I hereby admit to deleting three posts from this thread: Michael's offering to donate in exchange for a swimsuit calendar of me; my responding with links to flattering photos of myself (all of which were already in the Dawn Patrol archives); and Wind Jammer's adding the equivalent of a "Yeah, Baby!"
I picked up Michael's bait out of vanity, which I shouldn't have done. In his defense, he is a man of his word. I just hope he reads The Dawn Patrol for the articles as well.

Dawn:
No problem. I already anticipated the deletion and saved the hot babe photo to desktop. Like Wind Jammer said “Yeah, Baby!” And I add “To die for!” And yes, I do read for content. Is it my fault that the author of The Dawn Patrol is a fox?
I hope the cash helps. And as for the rest of you, send Dawn some $$$.

Your blog has always been a tonic -especially in the dark, damp winter. Your combo of wit, honesty, and [ challenging ]wisdom is one [inter-]national treasure. While I wish you rapid success in getting another position, I would love in the meantime to see your distinctive voice being enjoyed in many outlets, like National Review recently.
Has the "NY Observer" piece been picked up yet by other media ? Would e.g. Fox News feature this story of not-so-free speech ? Might that also bring in some offers - of interesting freelancing as well as permanent posts ?
Thanks again for your joyful presence, and keep on bloggin. Tom Carew

Thanks, Wind Rider [*blush*].
Tom, thanks so much. I would love to freelance for more outlets. Your suggestion of Fox News would be great, but unfortunately it's owned by Rupert Murdoch—who also owns the New York Post. At any rate, I greatly appreciate your encouragement, and I'm glad you found my blog.
