The Dawn Patrol: Comments

I have never been disappointed by a Rhino collection, ever. These cats know what they're doing. (Ultra bonus points for being the folks who bring us Mystery Science Theater eps on DVD and VCR.)

I don't recall ever seeing the band called "Chris Stamey and the dBs." What must Peter Holsapple think? ;-)

I'm the same age as you (at least, if that was Dawn posting), and I don't recognize a single one of those cuts. I think I feel my hairline receding again.

Oy vey. I thought I was still young and relevant.

Then I saw Teenage Fanclub on that track list.

I may have to go jump off my roof now.

The Mixtape That Changed My Life had the Lyres' "Help You Ann" (Track 2) on it.

I'm on the older side than Dawn and some others (late-late boomer; '58) but I was an avid MTV watcher, I listen to a really broad assortment of music (P.D.Q. Bach, anyone?), and still it frustrated me that I only knew 4 artists out of this group. What confuses me is the title of the post - Harry Chapin is WAY before these folks, Dawn! You've mixed your metaphors, so to say - most of the people who can name all of the artists on this collection won't have a clue as to the significance of your title. You're one of the few people your age whose musical taste runs all the way back to the 60's. AND you've spoken personally with some of the all-time greats, like Harry Nilsson.... (I remember well how when I was a DJ on the college radio station a certain track on 'Son of Schmilsson' had been altered with a razor blade to prevent airplay for some strange reason!)

Is that AM of FM?

As soon as I saw this collection existed in Entertainment Weekly, I ordered it :)

Ah. Forgot that HaloScan ban on cut and paste quotes. I meant to say TF has a new record out, 'Man-made' which is on heavy rotation airplay at the

itunes.

Son of Schmillson was edit-free at LSU. But it's been a while.

Speaking of "It's been a while," isn't it interesting how so many current tunes feature the "Big F" and "Big S" as part of the lyrics as if they were just standard English? On the radio, the words are simply edited out, leaving an obvious gap -- i.e., "I've gone and [instrumental] things up again" and "Read between the lines -- what's [instrumental]-ed up and everything's all right."

So much for poetry. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

PDQ Bach! His Missa Hysteria (I think it's called) is great: "Credo in, at most, unum deum...."

Shouldn't the title be "I Am the Morning DJ / on W-O-L-DEE-DEE-Dee-dee-dee . . ."? ;-)

Now you know how we older folks felt when the first Nuggets box came out--though this one is, I think, considerably more time after the original recordings than the first was.

And someday there's be a third-wave psych/garage compilation...

It looks like a good collection.

what are y'all talkin' about?

Doesn't bother me any. I already went through my "Turn Around" moment when I got the Mad Violets CD.
