The Dawn Patrol: Comments

LOVE it!! Totally Pythonesque! Extra impact for me, seeing these talking Ken dolls for the first time (Spouse assures me it is something called 'super-marionation'). Best line is 'his trusty assistant Matthew'--that would be the Graham Chapman part...many thanks to you for culling the absolute wackiest cultural lintball-critters from the Web and bringing them to us for our enjoyment...

It is also downright John the Baptist.

"I must decrease, so that he may increase."

Suddenly, the glass of wine that I had drunk prior to viewing this video (not in preparation for it, I should add) seems like two or three more.

An interesting choice of name for the priest, however. Stanley Unwin was the publisher who agreed to publish The Hobbit (on the recommendation of his son Raynor, who said something to the effect that it would appeal to children upto the age of 8. He was nine at the time) and, twenty years later, The Lord of the Rings. I wonder if he and Anderson ever met.

Malcolm

Actually, in this case, it's super-Marianation.

[dodges flying tomato]

Malcolm, the Stanley Unwin character is named after another real-life Stanley Unwin, the comedian who voiced the super-Marianated priest. The Wikipedia article I linked has more.

i never liked ken dolls ... i was never sure if their market was intended to be the boys or the girls.
in either case, i never liked ken dolls.

now, barbie's market was obvious - it was for boys who wanted to see how the other side stacked up, so to speak.

is there a full length version of this vid - or is the old tv show just a memory relegated to live on in this trailer?

The series is available on DVD, and I think YouTube has some more clips.

"It's... the Bishop!"

Will, Todd Seavey thought the same thing -- that Monty Python got the idea from that show.

::sigh:: Jeff Miller beat me to it!

It's a pity that Fr Unwin is Anglican, though ... (The giveaway is the double-breasted cassock.)
