The Dawn Patrol: Comments

Great photo. I'm tempted to stop by that church on a Friday to see if they have fish served by Dominican fryers.

Bah-dum.

Oh, and mad propz for your honesty and composure. I don't know how well I'd do there in Bizarro World, where jaws drop at the apparently insane suggestion that marriage is between one man and one woman. Where the #$&8 did you get that idea, anyway?

Boy, that interview had a little of everything in it!

It never occurred to me before that there is this question of "Did you have to renounce Judaism when you became Catholic?" I'm a cradle Catholic--and I mean no offense to Jewish people when I say this--I consider Judaism to be part of my heritage too (although in a different way, I guess).

Not to get too far OT but aside to St. K.: I can't remember where you commented on Dawn's blog that you dreamt Matthew Sweet gave you a tour of his studio. (My brother got married last weekend and my head's still spinning, happily.) I wanted to tell you that in real life, while I didn't get a tour of his studio, when I was in college he let me and my friend (may she rest in peace) climb aboard his tour bus (blue for Blue Sky on Mars). My friend was writing for her college newspaper and she got to interview him after he played a concert there (what's now Phila. U.). Fastball, before anybody knew who they were, opened. M. Sweet was really nice to us!

HI Dawn:

I very much liked this interview primarily because you accurately and forthrightly stated your opinions on several issues including several matters pertaining to Catholic moral theology.

There is, I think, a tendency for some Catholics and probably Christians in general to state positions on controversial and/or topical issues in an equivocal and almost evasive manner; as though we are embarrased by our beliefs.

We have no need to behave in this way and I think your interview illustrates this point well. Good job!

Ron

"For me chastity is truly liberating. ...you can do anything you want and not be bound by this idea that something is a waste because I can't meet the right man."

Absolutely wonderful, Dawn! And a great interview; wonderful responses to some very probing questions. Is Hyman (apt name) really so terribly confused? He seems convinced you've taken a "vow of celibacy."

The fish may come from the friars, but if you want chips, you need to see the chip monk.

I thought it was a great interview. The odd thing about it is how foreign the entire idea of chastity seemed to the interviewer. It's like they're on a different planet sometimes.

It's a very interesting piece. I have to say, I'm not sure, as a seminarian, how much I'd be free to self-disclose. That's something I'm still not sure about.

The beauty of lay people speaking the gospel in the world, which is their vocation, is that they are, in a way, more free to self-disclose than are people under vows. I am grateful for and admire your candor, Dawn.

Fantastic interview...cool cookie! My favorite line: "I was a drummer..."

i now have a new definition for 'being bold'.
you are it!

Really enjoyed your graciousness and sense of humor throughout the interview.

I didn't know you could read the Bible in Hebrew. I always wanted to be able to do that.

I loved the part of this interview where he says saving sex until marriage seems "arbitrary." I marvel at how different people's worldviews can be.

How come you never play Stump Dawn here?

Great interview. Well-handled at every level.

Fantastic interview Dawn! I liked how you didn't back down.

Dennis, I see no reason why a seminarian should pretend that he is not or has not been human in the past. When we try terribly hard to appear unblemished we lose sight of who we are. It was Paul who said that in our weakness God is strong (II Corinthians 12:10 and surrounding verses) and who laid it all out in Romans 7:14-25.

Of course, for us Rugby fans, the real House of Pain is a world away.

That interview was quite a grilling. Good on you for keeping your composure and not letting him trip you up. Obviously, he is rather hostile to the whole idea of chastity. Well, perhaps not necessarily hostile...he just can't comprehend it.

Excellent interview, Dawn. My admiration for you grows by the day.

I like how you give totally, uh, naked answers to his frequently impertinent, smart-ass questions, keeping your cool the whole time. And, as many commenters above have stated, I marvel at the cluelessness of this guy -- saving sex for marriage is "arbitrary"?!?!?! His obvious confusion about the differences between celibacy and chastity? His obvious support of gay "marriage" and relationships and obvious disdain of, say, normal, married, sexual behavior? This guy is a parliament of wonders!

Anyway -- well done!!

I think the interview was good, Dawn, but what really gets me are several of the comments in Radar and espcially in Gawker. No charity towards you at all. Like cavedwellers squinting in pain from too much light. Amazing.
