Interesting statements from Lost's producer. I'm a fan of the show and have eagerly been anticipating its return this evening. |

The whole theme of the show is science vs. faith, and it makes a good argument for both sides. And it's entertaining and confusing as well. :) |

In terms of Mr. Eko, he was killed off because the actor didn't want to be on the show anymore. I don't think it had anything to do with the character's religious nature. |

Cuse is soooooo right...as I discovered when faced as a CCD teacher with a classroom full of bored, hyper, functionally illiterate NYC schoolchildren who had gotten through 5 years of Sunday School and didn't know who Mary was or what the Eucharist was ("da bread?") The textbook was full of multicultural folk tales and stories about soccer and recycling. I chucked it, took a deep breath, and started telling Jesus' parables as a storyteller, from memory, using every bit of mime, mimicry, stand-up comedy, and bodywork I'd ever learned in drama class. Bingo. His disciples didn't call Him "Master" for nothing. In all my life, the homilists who have set eyes open, spines straight in the pews, and hearts on fire have been the STORYTELLERS. I have come to see the story as a holy thing, one of the aspects of our humanity that channels the divine into ourselves, others, and the world...as I suspect Dawn intuited when she made her own story the heart and soul of her book. |

I should also mention that the character Charlie Pace was raised devoutly Catholic, and when he drowned after he turned off the jammer that prevented radio transmissions from the island from going out, he makes the Sign of the Cross as he dies... |

In fact, except for Sayid, all of the characters whose religion we know are Catholic. All right, Desmond COULD have been in an Anglican monastery, but do the writers know that? |
