The Dawn Patrol: Comments

Very interesting. And encouraging. And its message does hit hard (thanks, guys, for mentioning "gonorrhea in the throat" - such a lovely picture there).

Knowing next to nothing of contemporary Jewish theology, I wonder if there is some movement toward a type of Theology of the Body, much of which is grounded in the Genesis creation accounts? I do believe that Orthodox Judaism and traditional Catholicism are, in many ways, closer to each other than either is to the more "progressive" branches of Judaism or Christianity, so maybe this is an area where we can join in common cause. (Truth does have a way of uniting folks who are open to it.)

I really like the site in many ways, and I agree that it is good that they are taking this on.

I have a hard time with the language they use about men and women: "Men want sex for sex, women want it for intimacy," and the generalizations that women are more hurt by casual sex. This may even be true, in terms of numbers, or biology, or social conditioning... but it can be a real turn-off to young people who know it is not always the case. (They know men who ARE vulnerable and hurt by casual sex; they know women who think nothing of it.)

I know this is an area that has generated a LOT of discussion on your site before. I don't really have a grand statement to make, or a solution to some of the thornier questions about the genders when it comes to sex.

I DO think there are differences, and some generalizations can be made. But I think that many men are insulted by the broad brush that paints men and women this way. So many men are fans of your work, Dawn. I think that tells us a lot about how men experience intimacy, and also how they want to.

But- let me not speak for all the men. I think I am mostly speaking for my husband, right now.

Did I ever tell you guys why my ex and I broke up? It had to do with mythology. I liked the ancient Greeks, but she liked the Trojans.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

So do I have a future in stand-up comedy?

This is very encouraging. Despite contemporary sentiment, Christians are not the only ones who advocate for abstinence. I'm hoping to dedicate a couple months of my life to some hardcore research of the teachings on human sexuality of some of the major world religions. The youth of the world (esp. in USA) need to know that throughout the world, in many cultures since the beginning of time, that sex is sacred and reserved for the one-flesh bond between man and woman. It echoes in our hearts, and yet we've convinced ourselves that unrestricted, casual sex is part of our human nature, nevermind a danger to us.

Nolan, your proposed research project reminds me of the appendix C.S. Lewis put together in his book The Abolition of Man. He borrowed the term "the Tao" to refer to the moral beliefs commonly held by mankind throughout the book, and in the appendix he cited similar examples from cultures as diverse as ancient Egypt to Confucianism on issues such as sexual behavior, murder and so on. I think you will have a similarly powerful collection when you perform your research and put it together.

See http://www.crossroad.to/Excerpts...s- abolition.htm for excerpts.
