yeah, but zaxby's was never as good. it was actually started by a former employee fed up with guthrie's not taking his ideas for diversification in their menu. now zaxby's has a thousand chicken items... none all that impressive.

oh yeah, plenty of other guthrie's in other college/southern towns. the only one left, that i know of in georgia is in newnan. there's a list on their website.

you guy's are fucked. Zaxby's is fucking good. they've got a few different things that I like. The fuckin zaxby's club, fingers platter, and kickin chicken sandwhich. those fries are good. maybe guthries was a little better, but look who's laughing now. Pretty soon the owner of guthries is going to be working with Mo Tucker at walmart, while the owner of zaxby's picks out his new leer jet. Hmm.....maybe they should have diversified their menu. guthries was good, but zaxby's definitely does not suck. guthries was my hangover food freshman year until I discovered zaxby's had the chicken club sandwhich and the kickin chicken. then I told guthries that I was done eating their food and taking shits right afterwards
it is sad to see the athens tradition go though......you'd think that one on campus could have survived at least. FYI: when I was on the up and up with local restaurant rumors, the guthries on campus had quite a reputation for unsanitary conditions. They had habitually bad health scores, and the place was known to be frequented by rats. that certainly doesn't help business along with 6.50 for a gut box with no drink included!

I say: Zaxby's chicken is okay. Their fries are too heavily spiced. The best chicken fingers in town were at Last Call before Kelly's took over their kitchen. Amazing stuff.
never had those last call ones. blind pig's chicken fingers are pretty good
the pig's fingers were okay - pretty standard. their burgers were good, but nothing extraordinary. the beer was moderately priced. the waitresses were generally hot but the bar guys were generally dicks. the free wrestling pay-per-views were a plus. the trivia was easy and the source of almost limitless free meals and drinks. but best of all was the location: a three minute walk from my apartment. all in all, five out of five, and easily Athens' greatest achievement.
their hot sauce is actually hot - that's a plus.
just for the record... i work at the Broad River Outpost in Danielsville and somehow the defunct overgrown Guthries that has stood out there vacant for so many years is now all shined up and open. the same great food and the sauce. the first night when i was driving home and say those letter shining in neon glory in the sky i almost cried. it was amazing. i know it's a trek but if you're jonzing go to the Guthries in Danielsville. clean, good service... you won't be disappointed.
Not to say Guthrie's didn't have it's bad points, but I do know for a fact it didn't have rats ~ Robo Dave comment~ I worked there for about three years and have worked at both the eastside and Baxter Street restaurants, but Baxter St. was "home". I HATE RATS and can promise you that I would have been so gone if there were rats.
Zaxbys is really fukin disgusting, the chicken tastes like two-week-old pop-tarts!
