Gravatar I attended the youthful punk rock gala at the 40 W. Friday night and was most impressed by the Soviettes and the Epoxies. Did not stick around for Against Me. I think I was the oldest person in the audience by about two decades, except for maybe Jon Bird. Missed the "Is Venice Sinking?" early set but at least caught a few moments of their soundcheck. Heard the plaintive wail of Meredith Bragg from the back deck.
Should've gone out Saturday but did not. Did little more than play catch with my son Sunday.

Gravatar Dinner with my mom at Farm 255 Friday. It has improved slightly, but not a ton. The drinks are good, though. Thought about hitting Caledonia, but the gate was still locked at 10:15, and my feet hurt.

Saturday: Sautee-Nacoochee, Jules Shear, and Helen. All this is documented in photos at Athens World. It was awesomeness.

Sunday: Harry Potter. Bitter hatred of fantasy football. Peace made with idea that as long as life remains good, fake football can suck.

Gravatar I like how MailClerk asks if anyone saw the show on Saturday night despite the fact that we all saw each other there...

Sat. night's show was incredible, and many thanks should be given to the Caledonia for letting it run late and allowing SRB Trio to finish up their full set. And thanks to the promoters (cough cough**BOO**cough cough) for setting it up - it was a perfect bill and I look forward to more of these types of shows.

I didn't do much else of importance all weekend. Helped some friends do some moving for their new house in Marietta on Friday and Saturday, but Sat night at the Caledonia was definitely the highlight of my weekend. Nice to see all you dayjobbers there although I didn't get to speak to most of you - it was a little too crowded to move around and mingle.

Gravatar Saturday was terrific pretty much all around. My uncle took me out to dinner (he was in town refereeing the GA/KY game), so hooray for free food and getting filled up. Still managed to find room for 2 Roosters wings, though. I missed the Mendoza Line's set, though, as I had to run home. How was it?

Gravatar I thought they were good. My first time seeing them live. Is it just me or does Philip's bro-in-law have the Arlo Guthrie/Dylan thing going on vocally? Philip's sister has a really nice voice and is obviously also the better-looking half.

I stayed home on Friday night due to not feeling well, but Sat night found me also at the Caledonia for 7 1/2 hours of drinking. Good lord. I should go a bit later next time, but I really wanted to see Tonks, who was fabulous as usual. I thought everyone did a really good job and yes, big props to Boo and the Caledonia (only 2 folks on staff) for all their good efforts.

I was really so excited to hear the Star Room Boys trio and it was well-worth the wait. It's some of the most excitement I've felt to see a band around here...as I feel like those 2 records are a regular part of my monthly diet. There were some parts that were a little rough around the edges, but that was to be expected. I think, overall, it was great and I want more! The place sure did get packed by the end of the night...most amt of people I've seen in there since J Mascis, or maybe Maserati when they stopped letting folks in.

As if that wasn't all great, I came home Sat night to a fresh pot of crock pot chilli. There ain't nothin' better than getting your food all loaded in that thing, put it on low for the night, go get bev'ied up, and then come home to a house smelling like chilli! Quite simply, it f'ckin ruled!

Gravatar Oh yeah, I saw Harry Potter Friday and I am supposed to blab about it tomorrow on the Liz Dalton show on NewsTalk 1340 WGAU AM. Too bad Tim Bryant won't have me on to talk about Oconee County Politics!

Gravatar I'll stay out of this, but thanks to (in alphabetical order) Boo, CH, Jayne, KM, LB, MC, PM, and any other TDJ types who attended. You made it a very fun show.

Gravatar Went downtown friday night, but it was kinda dull (maybe it was just me). Saturday was great though: the band played an early show up in Madison County and after that I went to the contradance in Oconee County. I get around! Sunday, I ran into Team Brown at the grocery store and I spread some grass seed over the lawn, so yes, let it rain!

Gravatar I'm pissed that I missed the show Sat.... arghhh...

Besides watching lots of football, the only thing of interest from my weekend was that I caught my first episode of "Boondocks" on the Cartoon Network... Anyone else seen that? Funny stuff.

Gravatar The "Is Venice Sinking?" acoustic set did not happen. We had to practice with Meredith Bragg and there were other circumstances as well. The show went well, though, all things considered. Wish there had been a better crowd because we played well, I thought.

On Saturday, I went to watch my beloved AU Tigers trounce Alabama (the score did not reflect the trouncing...junk points at the end for AL). It wasn't the most exciting game, but the atmosphere there (and I love the Dawgs, mind you) kills even GA/FL in my opinion. I might be biased, but I feel like the fans actually care about the football game more and not just being jackasses. Though I love GA, I must admit that Georgia's fans, when viewed from afar, don't come out looking so good.

Sunday I went to the Mall of Georgia and said things like "that lining in that jacket is cute" and "that scarf would go great with your new boots." Yep, completely emasculated.

Gravatar Friday- Walk The Line - excellent.
Saturday - Dawgs on Tv with the crew, felt sad for those cats (former UK student). Watched Bama get shellshocked. Frankie's for dinner with Ice and Beers. Then got into this:

GBVDVDHDTVOTPATL (that was the chant)

Guided By Voices (last show) DVD on a HD TV at OTP which happens to be in ATLanta. We also called Zieg a bunch of times and chanted this into the phone: Z-I-E-G-G-B-V-D-V-D-H-D-T-V-O-T-P-A-T-L-L-O-L. Seemed fucking hilarious after 4 Makers.

Sunday - yard work like hell. Watched the first half of the falcons - cleaned my basement getting ready for the move, and found a shit load of old music stuffs to sell on EBAY. Dinner with dad and L. Fn crashed early.

Gravatar Doesn't everything get better after four Makers? I played a show at Dutch's Tavern in Louisville and the bartenders/owners bought us three rounds of Makers shots because they are some of the nicest people in the world. I remember hugging a guy who heckled us, saying "It's not your fault" Good Will Hunting-style.

Gravatar Hillary, I've come to terms with the fact that you love all that ghetto, flash in the pan rap radio junk now that I know you share an apprecation for Jules Shear. All crimes are paid.
I shall not make fun ever again of your rap fetish ever again.

Gravatar Truest words Lucas! Truest words.

Gravatar Monday came too quick.

Friday night I watched Zachary Gresham from the Summer Hymns ruffle feathers in Gainesville during a solo performance. Yes, they asked him to stop. No, Gainesville is not ready for that level of psychedelia.

Saturday I ran up a nice bar tab at the Caledonia.

I hope this convinces the Trio to come out of hiding, and the Mendoza Line to come home, more frequenty.

thanks TDJers!

Gravatar I played a show at Dutch's Tavern in Louisville and the bartenders/owners bought us three rounds of Makers shots because they are some of the nicest people in the world.

Well, you were near the homestead of Makers too. Are y'all Makers ambassadors? They send out funny stuff. Kinda craving that sweet stuff now...I think I'll have to get some for the holidays.

Speaking of which, if TDJ'ers ain't got something going on tomorrow, be sure to come check out one of my favorite songwriters tomorrow night at the Caledonia, Jerry Joseph. It's not with his usual band (sigh), but the solo thing is still good. The subject matter is most often religion, politics, drugs and sex. What more do you need just before Thanksgiving?

Gravatar A turducken.

Gravatar But NOT a tofurkey.

Gravatar Tofurkey is nasty! It's one of the reasons I quit being a vegetarian.

Also, so happy that the bittorrent is already posted from Saturday's show. Sloan Simpson is AWSM!

Gravatar Saturday night was fantastic. It was a pleasure to see the McArdles on stage together. Bracy was definitely milking some Dylanesque inflections -- seemingly moreso than usual -- it got to the point where I nearly busted out laughing when Tim sang a line that included the words (if I recall correctly) "blood on the tracks." I dunno - maybe they were covering Dylan and I couldn't tell. Of course, another song had a similar riff as the Pretender's "Middle of the Road," so maybe there's some sort of theme here...

Spoke briefly with Tim after the set, and got the distinct impression that he couldn't quite remember who I was. It was great to see Shannon again after so long, too...

Star Room Trio was great and Gerow did a admirable job behinds the kit. Great cover of "I Found a Reason" -- Did the SRB cover that way back when? Thinking about the set on Sunday, I seemed to have a faint memory of hearing Dave sing that before. Also -- I seem to remember someone there with a Canon XL1s. Was someone videotaping the show, and if so, what're they gonna do with it?

Much thanks to Jayne for the Guinness -- just goes to show that even if you're a mean, ornery jackass, people will still do nice things for you.

Also, I'm feeling paranoid that I can't figure out who Boo is. Some things I'm just not meant to know, I guess...

--KM

Gravatar Tofurky is soooo not nasty. I used to love me some Tofurky back when I was a vegetarian. I even bought the Tofurky slices during the rest of year. Good stuff.

Is that why you wouldn't talk to me at the Caledonia on Saturday?

--KM

Gravatar Since it's the holiday season, I think we should remember that there's a little Boo in all of us.

Gravatar I've mostly been a vegetarian ('cept for seafood) for 10 years, but I still haven't tried a tofurkey. They are expensive. I'll eat the hell out of some side dishes Thursday though. I gotta figure out all my recipes today, in fact. If anyone's got something good, send it my way. Going home to eat some more chilli now!

Gravatar Fake meat is not cool.

Thank you, Mr./Ms. Anonymous. I've been a Jules Shear fan for more than 10 years now, so it was absolutely worth the trip, and he was very nice about signing our album cover. To Team Brown specifically, no less.

Gravatar one word to anyone stupid enough to waste money on a tofurkey..

tofuckyourself!

Gravatar Mendoza Line was good. Quite a few more people there then last time...is that the draw of Star Room Boy-Trio?

Also, where is Pete Hoffman? Apparently no longer in Mendoza Line? I cannot accept that.

Gravatar Mendoza Line without Pete seems silly. He was the only one holding it together when I saw them. I take it that the female member of the band was not screech owl-like? That is good.

Gravatar KM - Sorry I didn't say hello on Saturday, it certainly wasn't an intentional diss (despite your affection for tofurkey). I saw you a few times across the room, but despite my love for you, I wasn't drunk enough to try and climb through the throng of people to get to you. I think I pointed or waved at you once, if that counts. I hate crowds.

Gravatar LB - No prob! That crowd was a mother!

Hillary, I'd expect better from a quasi-hippie... As much as I love eating steaks nowadays, I have much love for lotsa fake meats -- the Morningstar Farms line is particularly good. I still buy their "sausage" links occassionally, and I think I probably prefer their corn dogs to the real thing. Their meatless Crumbles are a great substitute for ground beef in chili recipes, as well.

That said, I heard a rumor that my office's Xmas party may be at Ruth Chris' Steakhouse. That is some good f'in meat. Hopefully the company will be paying for my filet...

--KM

Gravatar It's "Ruth's Chris Steakhouse."

It's easy to remember, because it makes no fucking sense whatsover.

Those Morningstar Farm buffalo chick'n nuggets are pretty damn tasty too.

Gravatar Bleh. Again, I have no real problem with vegetarians. I just think, hell, if you want the meat, then eat the meat. Processed vegetable proteins tend just to taste like their seasonings rather than what they're constituted of, and that seems wrong. Also, the texture is frequently gross. I tried my first tofu dog the other day and was not impressed. I would eat it if I crashed in the Himalayas, but not generally otherwise.

Gravatar Thanks, CH. I'd hate to accidentally end up at Ruth Chris' Steakhouse. I hear that place is a fucking dump.

--KM

Gravatar the Morningstar Farms line is particularly good

Yes, they are. I love the chik nuggets- eat 'em all the time. I don't eat all the fake meat products, but some of them are quite good. Adds a little variety to my typical potatoes and pasta diet.

Gravatar Processed vegetable proteins tend just to taste like their seasonings rather than what they're constituted of,

Yeah, and no one seasons their meat in any way. Sausage just tastes like that naturally. So I take it you only eat bland food, and especially not spicy ethnic foods, which not are not only often heavily seasoned, but also sometimes contain tofu?

Heck, the great thing about tofu is that it absirbs flavors so readily.

But this just seems like a silly cop out. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and sausages are not naturally occuring forms of meat -- they're processed products to begin with. In many cases, I'd prefer a tofu dog to a who-knows-what's-in-it processed meat hot dog. A hot dog is processed animal protein, a tofu dog is processed vegetable protein.

If you don't like the tatse, that's one thing, but it seems unlike you to say that just because someone wants to eat a tubular length of processed protein served inside a bun, or a flattened patty of protein served with ketchup and pickles, then that means they must eat the meat versions of those foods.

--KM

Gravatar Absorbed, whatever....

Gravatar That was me mocking my own spelling, by the way. Now shall I mock my inability to sign my last post?

--KM

Gravatar Okay, but beef does have more natural flavor than tofu, right? You'll admit that? I don't really put a ton of seasoning on my food. Because I have this thing we call a palate.

How is a hamburger a processed meat product more than a steak? It's just ground beef.

The real difference between a tofu dog and a real hot dog, to me, is the casing. The tofu dog doesn't have one. So the texture is totally screwy.

I just think the fake meat is a cop out. Eat tofu, fine, but tofu shaped into something? Why would you bother?

Gravatar That is the wonder of modern industrialized civilization.

You could just as easily ask, "Why eat pork butts and snouts shaped into a tubular form?" or "Why grind up beef and flatten it into a patty?"

--KM

Gravatar Eat tofu, fine, but tofu shaped into something? Why would you bother?

Because why not?

As long as you don't go into it thinking of a tofu or veggie product as a specific taste substitute for a type of meat, there shouldn't be any problem (or comparison, besides, I dunno, shape).

Gravatar Fine. Whatever. Enjoy your protein that pretends to be another form of protein.

Gravatar AGAHHH! This always gets to me. It's called "Ruth's Chris Steak House" because RUTH bought an existing restaraunt named "The Chris Steak House". Thus it became Ruth's Chris Steak House.

Gravatar It bothers me that Sean Hannity is their big advertiser.

Gravatar The shape thing makes it more versatile for different kinds of dishes or sandwhiches. Plus, I guess it's probably part of a marketing plan to perhaps better target folks who want a substitute, but are too scared of something that looks completely foreign (like how people reacted to tofu when it first became popularized.) So if it looks like a turkey slice, it might not be that bad for instance. (Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't...cuz some are still gross.)

They do get carried away, but for vegetarians, more variety is always welcomed. Gee, what a tangent...

Gravatar That's probably right, Jayne. I should consider it that way.

Also, I'm just not big on the textured veggie protein to begin with. A veggie burger can be great, but more so if it tastes like, say, mushrooms than if it tastes like salty nothing.

Gravatar Hey, rock and roll lawyer has a new T-shirt up!

http://www.jhpii.com/d_orderform.html

Gravatar I wonder if those are printed or if he just wrote on them with a marker.

Gravatar thanks for the T-shirt heads-up Jayne, my wardrobe appreciates it...

Gravatar They are printed. I, and others here, have the everyday warrior one. It's so soft and good quality. (Perhaps a bit too long though). I've already seen quite a few around town.

Gravatar My roommate has one. They are very very long. Wonder if he got the shirts on deep discount / factory error or something.

Gravatar Boo - Care to expound on the Zachary Gresham story in G-ville? Sounds strange - I'd love to know what exactly went down.

Gravatar Will - I will expound..not because I'm a gossip hound, but beacuse I am still at work and looking for a distraction...

Zach was off to an inauspicious start arriving roughly 45 minutes after the set was to begin (because of a speeding ticket)...

The crowd of roughly 40 folks were very in to Golden Tee and chatter so he decided to experiment with some looping mechanism and impromptu (perhaps offensive?)lyrics and chords and an Indian drum, because the audience was indifferent...The looping was loud and pretty irritating. Some people left. The manager said he'd pay him to just stop. He did. An artist needs to elicit some kind of reaction from an audience, right? Mission accomplished.

I think he's one of the best songwriters around-- even if the video gaming, small talking crowd in Gville doesn't get won over...

Gravatar "How is a hamburger a processed meat product more than a steak? It's just ground beef."

Well, when you buy ground beef you're getting meat from several different cows. This is what caused Mad Cow disease to be easily spread. At least a steak is only from one animal.

Gravatar Or so Big Meat would have you believe.

Gravatar Big Meat's best album was their self-titled debut that also featured the single "Big Meat", which went to number 1 in Scotland in 1986, landing briefly in the U.S. top 40 at around the same time.

Gravatar Their follow-up effort, When You Buy Ground Beef You're Getting Meat From Several Different Cows. This Is What Caused Mad Cow Disease To Be Easily Spread. At Least A Steak Is Only From One Animal. lacked a catchy single and ultimately failed to resonate with the public, some believe because (in the spirit of Fiona Apple) the album's title was simply too wordy to catch on through grass-roots efforts the way their first album did.

Hampered by lack of sales, the group was unable to mount a successful tour, and due to constant in-fighting and eventually being dropped by their label, they called it quits less than a year after the album's release.

However, to this day, you can still walk into a crowded Scottish bar and yell, "Big Meat" and someone will surely respond with a hearty, "Big Meat!"

Gravatar Robo was a roadie for Big Meat, he handled their equipment like it was his own...

Gravatar Nice work here folks.

Gravatar Okay, I found the Big Meat Myspace:

http://myspace.com/bigmeattheband

Email me if you need the password and Big Meat's email address because I find it rather lacking in content.

Gravatar My email address, by the way is lucas at teamclermont dot com.

Gravatar Their follow-up effort, When You Buy Ground Beef You're Getting Meat From Several Different Cows. This Is What Caused Mad Cow Disease To Be Easily Spread. At Least A Steak Is Only From One Animal, lacked a catchy single and ultimately failed to resonate with the public…

No commas around appositives which are necessary for noun identification.

Gravatar For real, anybody want to help me set up the Big Meat MySpace?

Gravatar I'm gonna request Big Meat as my friend. They better add me...
