I haven't done my homework on Alito, but will take your word on it.
What I want to comment on is your statement of how the WH could swing from Miers to Alito. I think it was multi-faceted approach in an attempt to apease the schumers and reids of the dems and get a woman on the court he was familiar with.
I think also he was trying to avoid a fight at the level this nomination will bring, in light of the crap going on with the 'cia' scandal.
But surely, this nomination will put fitzgearald on page 32 while the dems scream and have their temper tantrums.

Great nomination. It scratches just where I was itching. I have a question you might have the answer to. If Alito gets to the SCOTUS, how many of the Justices will then be Catholic?

I believe that would make 5 ... Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Kennedy (ahem), and Alito.
Just wait, the Demos are going to be bringing this up. I can't wait. Very excited for the debate. In the end, though, they will cave.
There will be no filibuster, and he will get 60+ votes. He can't get more than 22 (b/c that's how many incredibly voted against Roberts) but he will get a number of Demos voting for him.
Mark, I do love it, and the chance to engage/discuss with Julie and our Demo friends. Schumer/Kennedy, I don't think they want to hear, but Julie does, so hey, it's all good ...

Just let Ted Kennedy bring up the Catholic thing (he probably won't) . . . as I recall that was one of the complaints about his late brother, John Fitzgerald. Either Ted Kennedy is for Catholics in office, or he was against his brother. He won't go there.
There will be vicious name-calling though. Remember, their actions are aimed squarely at regaining political power.

When Clinton nominated Ruth 'buzzy 'ginsberg she was confirmed against our better wishes. Souter we were told was a conservative and he turned out to be , well a Sooter.
The Repubs sent these two through the committee as if it were business as usual.
Now I hear Kennedy and his ilk saying, that Bush is appealing to the Right Wing of the party, as if to say that not many of us exist, that they are the main stream and we are the outcasts.
Are they that vain to even think that they are main stream and we the "little-people", the "little guy" so whacked out and so far off in right field, the religious zealots, that we shouldn't count ?
After all we do live in the RED STATES so maybe they have a point we actually work for a living and when we vote for president and he wins we actually believe the President will honor his promises.
Maybe thats their problem, they are so used to being lied to from the likes of Hillary and BJ Clinton that they are just horrified when someone actually does what he says..
Oh well 'Clinton happens.'
