Well done! I couldn't agree more with, well, just about everything you said.
I guess I object slightly to the word insecure. But it's probably accurate. Even when it comes to sporting events, I tend to think that the refs are rigging the game against our hometown teams. Anyone who watched the NBA playoffs last year has to come to a similar conclusion.
And I suppose part of it is a fragility that emerges from thinking that things are getting better and then having someone crack a joke about something happening in 1984. Yes, 21 years ago, a car was burned. People went apeshit. But in, you know, 1886, I'm sure some other city did something awful and we don't still talk about that, so let's give it a rest.
Hopefully people will find a new city to kick around though. Now that Cleveland is semi-trendy and Detroit has successfully hosted a few major events in the span of a year, the midwest/great lakes region needs a new place for the country laugh at.

Detroit has a lot to be insecure about. The roads suck, its Mayors have been corrupt, it was the Murder Capitol of the U.S. for a while (or is that World?), crime is rampant, public transportation is shameful, downtown is a shambles of burnt and boarded up homes, and the city is filthy in a very large radius. Detroit has all the disadvantages of a very large city, but very few of the advantages. Detroit scares people.
