I want to comment on this entry of yours. But I've realized that I simply like what you wrote and will just kind of sit here and twiddle my thumbs as a result.
By the way, was this post inspired at all by this recent legislative battle over DRM in France? It's an interesting time for these types of laws. I hope, as you clearly do, that actual individual people come out on top in the end.

Sometimes I would feel that since I am a huge vinyl nerd, that I need to get off my ass and start living in the 21st century. But after I read this, I'm glad that I can surpass all this retarded bullshit and make a mix tape ala 1991 style with my records. Hell, I have a Mac G4 and so you would think I would go balls out with an iPod with all the whistles and bells but yet I can't be bothered (that and I'd rather spend my money on more records and beer).
The funniest thing I have encountered with copyright law and such was when I managed to come across a limited edition 4LP box set of Foo Fighters new album "In Your Honor." On the back of the box was the FBI Anti-Piracy logo. Why would they put that there?......on a fucking record? I spent $30 for the fucking thing, aren't they satisfied with that? Are they still pissed about all the potential sales they lost when I taped my Cure and Bauhaus albums for friends in high school back in 1988? I had no plans of taping the Foo Fighters album (hell, I don't even tape much of anything anymore!), but now I will and I will make cassette copies to anyone who wants one just out of spite. Maybe I should make free cassette copies of all my vinyl and CDs available and start a low-fi revolution with an obsolete medium. They'd never see that coming! Who's with me? They won't notice anything until they see an abnormal surge of sales of cassette decks and boom boxes at Best Buy and Circuit City. Just remember, nobody will break into your car and steal your copy of Pantera on a Maxell tape. They will, however, steal your iPod.

Don't worry Verd, our politicians are hard at work with the record companies to find ways to close the "analog hole". I think it'll amount to special hearing aids we'll all be forced to wear. They'll always be on, but really work when you try to listen to anything that doesn't broadcast it's DRM flag.
The first part is true, the latter is probably what they're hoping for.

Actually, the post was inspired by me just now running across the Berlind video, though I did read about the stuff going on in France, too.

Richard Stallman thinks we should use "digital restrictions management". (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-
avoid.html#DigitalRightsManagement)
I dunno.
