I don't think most Westerners think anything is worth fighting for anymore. Or, rather, they love what they've got, but find it inconceivable that it could be taken away. As for the low enlistment in Canada's forces, I'm not surprised given the later post you wrote about the fact that Canadian troops, being ill-prepared thanks to government attrition, are taking worse hits than anyone else.
