The decision regarding the mission is due in two years time, and circumstances will change in one direction or another. I think the PM has been phrasing his comments to avoid killing a possible positive decision when that time comes. The poseurs are those whose invidious questions and comments prevent the Government from making long term commitments. It's the Brigade of Knotted Pantry-wetters who should be castigated and mocked.

My main problem with the PMO is that it is not taking leadership on the issue. When groups like the Ruxted group trump the government in explaining in detail the good being done, and when journalists end up being the ones detailing the good being done, there is a problem. Leadership in politics requires crystal clear and regular communication with the electorate ... this government has fallen flat on communication. Afghanistan is one case where the PMO has many journalists offering honest reporting and commentary and support more often than not ... yet it can't move itself to lead the way in telling us about the great work our people are doing over there. The opposition should be shamed into supporting the mission through strong logic argument on the part of the PMO. But we get virtually nothing.

aaaa: I believe that the thinking is to take Afghanistan off of the table for the next election. The CPC strategists are trying to remove every possible hot button issue from the Liberals.
What it amounts to though, is governing by the polls, which is a form of mob rule. There is on the other hand a clear option to take leadership on issues, especially those where the media and public are not convinced or where there exists a degree of support. There is a lot of good press on the Afghan mission ... so why not step up and win the debate. Instead, the PMO chooses to play a cynical game of chess.
Once again, the polls make it clear that Canadians see right through this. The CPC was doing the best with Canadians when it was taking leadership and winning the debate on key issues and being "conservative" ... now that the CPC is being governed by polls and liberal style strategy, it's plunged ... as it should.
