it would seem that some of the people that McCarthy was concerned about have gained a great deal of control in the US

On a related point: Who is the only Screen Actors Guild (SAG) President who does NOT have a portrait up in their HQ?
Ronald Reagan.
Ronald Reagan was elected President of the Guild by the membership for six continuous terms from 1947 through 1952, then from 1959 to 1969.
During his first six years as Guild President, Reagan led the fight against the Communists in Hollywood, particularly in the SAG and other movie-related unions. For leading this fight, he was (and is) hated by the Communists and their leftist sympathizers, then and now.
This is another facet of the historical revisionism of the Communists and hard left in America. There were a lot of Communists in Hollywood then and this is the source of the virulent anti-Americanism that emanates from Hollywood today.

Big L Liberals (progressives) always use the same means to cover their track record ... they invent counter myths then scream about them loud and long until myth becomes fact.
McCarthyism is fact/myth, even among conservatives who until recently have had no reference point on the matter except what the liberal media and hollywood have put out there. Liberal tactics work ... that's why they employ them so aggressively.
