Gravatar Why doesn't the Sac.Bee also print the family's home phone number too? After all, they gave me directions to their house.
I wouldn't want my daughter going there just because of that letter to the students. It's so malicious.

Gravatar I guess I understand why the bishop is staying out of this, but I wish he would do something.

And, am I being totally naive, or could the school have avoided this whole firestorm by simply calling a school assembly, laying out the (minimal) facts in a neutral fashion, declaring the subject closed, and requesting (mandating?) that students refrain from public discussion of the matter?

Gravatar I think there were a million better ways of handling it. Their intention, I think, was to inflame the students and make sure Katelyn and family would be shunned by the Loretto "community".
I believe that Sr Helen knew who she was hiring.

Gravatar Apparently, the Bishop can't intervene in the expulsion under canon law. According to the Diocesan Chancellor, the order that runs the school is a "religious institute in the church which is of pontifical right" and "they are subject in their internal affairs directly to the Holy See and not to the local bishop."

So, unfortunately, Katelyn is out of luck in that regard. However, that slanderous letter that the school sent home with their students is a friggin' meal ticket for Katelyn.

Gravatar Scarlette...no kidding. I think it is disgraceful - and I wouldn't be surprised either if Sr. Helen had all the dirt on Ms. Bains and still hired her. Obviously abortion is not 'taboo' at LHS.

Karen,

I agree. It didn't have to come to an expulsion, but even if it did, that was not the way to go about it.

Gravatar Jay,

Yeah...the language used and distributed to the students was quite unfortunate and irresponsible to say the least. It seems that even if the allegations are remotely true, it could be considered slanderous (but then again...I'm not a lawyer).

Gravatar Jay, why do you think the Sillses will be compensated?
The only way I can see that any monetary compensation could come of it is if 'Loretto' settles the matter out of court just to be done with it.
But, I'm not a lawyer either, although I have had the distinct pleasure of working with them.

And, how much would you like to bet that Marie Bains gets hired back?

Gravatar I'm tired of everyone trashing Loretto High School for expelling the student. I have a good friend that goes there, and everyone's judging the school right now because of this whole thing. I just want everyone to know that the girls at Loretto are awesome people, and if I ever have girls, I'd send my daughters there. It's a great school, so quit trashing it. So quit jumping on Loretto, why don't we approach this in a different manner? Why can't we just take the whole Roe vs. Wade trial back to the Supreme Court and let them decide again?

Gravatar Sam. No one is trashing the girls of the school. They're criticizing the administration for its high-handed handling of the situation.

Gravatar Ditto Jacob, in addition their is cause to have concern over their Catholic identity. It doesn't appear that the school has much concern for life.

Regarding the revisiting of Roe:

Soon, very very soon...

Gravatar Hey, Sam,
Guess what?
"Roe," Norma McCorvey, did that last year, in conjunction with Sandra "Doe" Cano of _Doe v. Bolton_. The law says the plaintiff in a suit can appeal his or her own verdict if new evidence is presented.
They filed a countersuit, to overturn the cases in which they were plaintiffs, bringing in thousands of affadavits from women who have been physically and/or emotinally damaged by abortion, to override the fundamental argument that "abortion is necesary for women's health," that underlies _Roe_ and _Doe_.

The Supreme Court refused to hear the case.

But this isn't about abortion. It's about the integrity of Catholic education.
