I don't think the cult of personality is obama's narrative. It's the narrative his opponents use to try to discredit him. I would describe his own narrative as some combination of mr smith goes to washington and community organizer on a nation-wide scale.
While he would not call it such, anybody who doesn't see that Obama's quite aware of his own charisma is dreaming.
There is an undercurrent of "my charisma will smooth over old arguments" in his campaign; what's striking is that he may actually have a point.
