I'll just note that there was a machine, in fact 2 machines, backing Obama as well. The old Senatorial machine, as it happens (look at the key early backers of Obama), along with the Chicago machine.

What is happening right now is that the old Senatorial machine is dismembering centers of power they don't control that are vulnerable to such dismemberment, mostly by choking off money.
