Ready on the Right--Ready on the Left--Ready on the firing line

When I first started hanging around gunshops 30 years ago there were always several bored wives sitting in their husbands cars reading or knitting. Now there are just as many gals as guys in the shops buying and swapping.

Contrary to what you might think, men have a built in disadvantage in shooting, deep down inside they think it's something which should come naturally and are just a little bit ashamed that they have to be taught. Women don't have that problem. I think someone once called it the "James Bond Syndrome."

And speaking of guns as dangerous weapons, I think it was Jeff Cooper who once made the statement "The gun is only a tool, the mind is the weapon."

Gravatar way ahead of you denise... when my wife and i moved to vermont 38 years ago one of the first things i did was to buy her a pistol and teach her to use it, when my daughter was old enough i taught her too and helped her get her first pistol, a 9mm colt "govt. model". now my grand daughter is almost 10 and next spring i plan to get her a brand new SIGsauer .22 "mosquito", (she's already learning the basics on grandma's old .22 llama and enjoying it.)

Gravatar Denise thank you for your excellent post. I have just learned to shoot this last year, (pin tops and steel plates). In fact we had a pin top shoot yesterday, I placed third out of twelve shooters.
Up until then I did not really think too much about guns, now, I am enjoying the sport and am confident I can defend myself if I have to.

Gravatar How I wish my wife would get over herself and come shooting. I told her all I need is 12 rounds: Load, shoot, reload, shoot, done! and I would never ask her to do it again. The funny thing, is she is not a wuss, or a feminist. She was a competition martial artist and no pushover. I fear for any guy who trys to take on in hand to hand. But she will not, under any circumstances shoot guns. She dosent think them evil or want them gone from the house, just wont shoot. Sad part is, I know her...she would LOVE it if she would try it!

Gravatar You've hit the nail right on the head with the 2 stereotypes. We do need more female activists.

Gravatar Interesting blog you have hear, I am interested in a serious Biathlon gun, I would like to be one of the first American's on the podium, however without the right gun, I am going nowhere..looking for suggestions, I have all the elements except this and I have been shooting a few and know what I like but also looking to see what else might be out there..

Gravatar Yes, I am a women..and I love to shoot..so it hasn't been easy searching, I have been laughed at by several gun dealers in the area..I know how much I have to spend, that is not an issue with my sponsors..but I am not just going to buy the first thing that comes along..thanks for the help..

Gravatar Very good article. My husband recently bought me a Taurus 1911 stainless steal with gold plating and pearl grips. He told our 15 year old daughter he was getting me precious metals for Valentines.

I have never minded him having the guns and occasionally he would take me out. Now we go once a week and I love it. I have been shooting the 45 now for three months and have a blast. I am confident in shooting and conceal carrying.

He is currently taking each of our children (to include the teen age daughter)to the range and teaching them proper shooting. Our daughter gave him the biggest grin when she shot my 45. I can't tell you how proud that made poppa.

If people would just realize it isn't the gun that kills. It's people. It is strictly an instrument/tool. A tool that must be used properly which only comes through proper training and handling.

The only reason I wouldn't carry my gun was due to lack of proficiency and comfort level. My husband is making sure I now have that.

You have my support!! I hope you got a new gun for your birthday!
