Gravatar The problem starts well before the uneducated consumer buys their PC. At this time all consumer based PC's should come with simple router hardware built in to hide the unit from the net. A low cost module designed to fit inside the PC could radically change the security in favor of the ignorant consumer.
I have a hard time convincing people I have helped clean up their PC that a simple cheap router could provide safer surfing. Similarly, it is even harder to get them to NOT click on every link in emails from people they do not know.
I now refuse to re-help individuals that will not take my advise for a router and curb their habit of even reading email from unknows.

Gravatar I agree. Today's consumer grade PCs should have hardware-based intrusion protection built in. One very cool device that could easily be incorporated is the Yoggie (yoggie.com). Or, those who don't need full business functionality could by a Zonbu (zonbu.com) appliance.
