"That could become id33mr-ted. Make some of the characters uppercase: iD3#mR-TeD (I made every other character uppercase — easy to remember)."
Careful here!
If you travel - i.e. if you use keyboards in different countries you will have different character for "#" if you simply remember it as [Shift+3]
e.g. in germany:-
Shift+3 = §
just in case!

There are passwords and there are passwords. For accessing an information website like Download.com, the password does not need the sophistication that a financial site requires. These are two extremes. For common sites where the risk of personal damage is minimal I use a password that is easy to remember (and the same password for all these sites). For most of these sites I disagree with the requirement to even have a password. Some offer automatic login. So determining who you are when using your home computer does not appear to be a problem.

Thanks for the comments, folks; glad to see there's good interest in security concerns.
Tom - you make a very good point. I never considered translation problems involving different language keyboards. One possible solution would be to change your password using the country's keyboard layout before you leave on your trip and then change it back before you depart for home. Anyone interested can see the German keyboard layout here: http://carbon.cudenver.edu/

Balayage - you're right. I'll give a simple method of dealing with passwords that don't have to be secure in the next issue.
Homer - I think you'll find my article in the next issue quite interesting, if not enlightening. I'll be looking forward to your comments.
Valerie - RoboForm is an excellent program and, yes, very secure; but, if someone guessed your Master Password, they would then have all of your login information you have stored in it. Even with RoboForm, you need at least one truly unguessable password. And since RoboForm remembers passwords--so you don't have to--why not make them all unguessable just to be sure?
Cheers!
