My father was interested in trying linux so I downloaded Ubuntu 8 and burned a copy in ISO format to a dvd. I took it to him last Sunday and we tried it out but we rebooted the disc in the player and didn't have to install it on the hard drive and certainly no partitoning took place. We looked and fooled with it for an hour or so and we both decided "what's the big deal?"
We will stick with windows thank you very much. Ubuntu to me is not very much of an OS. I tried red hat some years ago and again I can't see all the hoopla other than being open sourced. Well that being said I am sure it works for some and folks use it everyday and I'm glad it's there for them to experiment with.

@Mark,
The "big deal" is that Ubuntu is free of charge. So if you build your own computers it's kinda neat because you don't have to pay for it. The cost of Windows is built into the price of pre-manufactured computers and can range from $60 to over $300 of the purchase price. Some people also do not like to be "locked in" by vendors such as Microsoft or Apple, so Ubuntu provides those people a good platform to get their work done. Ubuntu isn't for everyone though and most people are satisfied with Windows. It's really just a preference thing.

While Linux isn't for everyone, it is an excellent OS. This is especially true when you consider it is open source and free.
One absolutely fabulous thing about Ubuntu, and Linux in general, is the low hardware requirements. This makes it a wonderful choice for someone running older hardware, or those who can't afford to build the latest wiz-bang computer.
It is also a viable alternative for those running outdated operating systems that aren't supported anymore.
In versions such as Ubuntu it satisfies both the geeks and casual users, which is one reason it is developing a strong following.

"what's the big deal?" – Indeed, what is the big deal? Let us start with the rudimentary stuff. Most everything on the Linux platform is FREE for life. The operating system is absolutely FREE. OpenOffice.org and Oxygen Office are full featured office suites for FREE. No DRM restrictions or phone home spyware imbedded. No need for fumbling, mumbling product keys…
The vast majority of computer users use their machines predominantly for web surfing, some word processing, photo editing, some CD/DVD authoring… why pay Mr. Gates or Apple when FREE alternatives exist?
Contrary to popular mythology, Linux does play Blue-Ray disks although the legality is hotly disputed.
Did I fail to mention, Linux running Beryl is the prettiest OS in existence?

Dave, Joey, thanks for your knowledge and time involved in this newsletter and in particular this "Installing Ubuntu Linux" article.
I am just fed up with all the problems that I have had with Microsoft Vista and especially the DRM restrictions.
I should have started using Linux before now but I will admit, Microsoft Windows was a comfortable seat. It was all I ever knew, it seemed that putting up with all the problems of a Microsoft OS with was just part of using a PC. Well, not anymore!
