I use a combination of #2 and #3. I have my own domain (registered using Nameboy) with unlimited mail addresses (hosted by Hostgator). In the past I used the email servers provided by my hosting company, but now I use Gmail. I have all my old josephbales.com email addresses forwarding to my Gmail account so that I don't miss anything and can access my Gmail account from any computer with web access (unless it has Gmail blocked which some employers do). If you search around and are willing to drop $6 to $10 a month, you can get domain hosting that will allow you to have unlimited email addresses.
