Gravatar I built my own computer about 4 years ago because I got tired of being at the mercy of PC makers that build their pc's to be obsolete every couple of years and make upgrading almost impossible.

It took a lot of research to make sure all the components I was buying were compatible with each other.

In the end it cost me about 1300.00 and while a little pricey I have a machine that still performs better then those being currently made.

I can upgrade the motherboard any time I like and at very little cost I can upgrade every few years to the latest technology but so far all I have upgraded was more RAM.

The project proved so successful I built one for my son.

After you build your own you will never go back to buying one off the shelf.

Gravatar I bought one computer in 1974. A 12ghz screamer. Since then I have always built my own boxes and glad to do so. I can easily spot a problem and fix it knowing what I did to create it I can deconstruct it and improve it even re-using some parts like CD, DVD drives, hard drives, Memory too should the platform accept it.
There is a lot that goes into doing the build the right way but that's the beauty of your own build.
I know that Windows led the way but they have dropped the ball far too often not to mention losing their way along the way to and not cared about much of anything other than their huge marked up bottom line, which by the way is shrinking all the time. The money they ask is so inflated it is no longer a joke. Four incarnation and more this time around. What a sad state they have driven themselves to. No wonder super Bill left. So pretty soon I go to Linux full time. Bye, Bye Redmond. Been dismal to know you.
Building your system yourself is rewarding challenging and just plain fun once you have done the your build the 1st time there is no going back to any manufacturer but yourself.
