Gravatar What "monolith" dburt???

I have political disagreements with family members.

However Crouch, like you, is trying justify Tomism and negrophobia which is the basis of his career as a so-called "social critic".

Wasn't Crouch once arrested for assaulting a Village Voice co-worker?

Talk about living up to stereotypes.

Gravatar Mmmm. I dunno how I feel about this guy. I agreed with about 80% of his presentation. I disagree however with his negation of hip hop as an art form and he also seemed a little dismissive. He tended to shout down anyone who argued that hip hop today has gotten away from its original roots (That is the voice of frustration crying out from the streets. Now it tends to glorify thug life) He instead refers to the original rap offerings as stupid or silly rhymes. The Message wasn't stupid or silly. Nor were the more cerebral, politically tinged, black unity songs of the late 80s and early 90s before gangsta rap took over.

Gravatar Interesting, I do remember seeing Crouch (remembered his face) speak out against gangsta rap around the time of the Don Imus controversy. I agreed with him then. I also agree with him in the clip where he is talking about 50 cent.

Looking at the second clip, I agreed with most of what he said. It was pretty interesting to learn where the culture of praising the "common man" came from in America and how it was accepted, and how it relates to what we see today. But towards the end he came across as having a narrow view of hip hop. Ex: The story where he asked his daughter to come up with some positive hip hop lyrics and she couldn't think of one. There are tons of hip hop artists out there w/ positive messages and we have to be careful not to lump it all together with the minstrel stuff we see today.

Gravatar "I do remember seeing Crouch (remembered his face) speak out against gangsta rap around the time of the Don Imus controversy"

No what Crouch did was the House Negro deflection.....ie...every instance of white bigotry or racism has to be redirected to an attack on hiphop or BET videos.

Just as in every music genre on earth, there is quality uplifting hiphop and there is the low level trash.

Crouch only concentrates on attacking the trash because that's what his readership (white conservatives, black sellouts) want to hear.

Gravatar Well in defense of Crouch, one can’t expect to be liked by everyone and I’m sure he is bound to miss marks on some of the issues centered on hip hop. You have to remember that Crouch is not only a writer but a musician as well (drums) and it would be safe to say that he (and Wynton Marsalis) are jazz purists. I’ve had discussions with Mr. Starks concerning the same issues. I was raised on soul, funk, jazz and jazz rock fusion but my teen years were also centered on hip hop. But I must confess, I was never comfortable with hip hop as an art form in the same league as others that required a great deal of composition, instrumentation and song structure. But again, I still listen to and respect some of the more progressive and underground segments of hip hop (like the kind we play on the show and that is NOT played (anymore) on conventional radio. Hopefully, I will get an opportunity to have Crouch on the show, meanwhile rock artist, Tamar-kali is coming up next. She is truly a phenomenal artist…..

Gravatar And no Steve, Crouch lambastes hip hop because it is perhaps the most popular art form. He's not going to attack an art form that no one listens to....your arguments just do not make any sense. Keep it consistent.

Gravatar Dburt, it's you who doesn't make any sense.

Crouch shows his inconsistency by stridently attacking hiphop for gratuitous violence, misogyny, etc yet he is a big fan of Quentin Tarantino?

It doesn't wash.

Gravatar That is a long video!
