Harlepolis, you're joking right? I do not think there was a winning or "schooling" done in the video link you just posted. I saw that video earlier and I thought that O'Reilly posed some legitimate questions to Sharpton and as expected he was deflecting them and not ANSWERING the questions, truthfully. The first question O'Reilly asked Sharpton-did he think what MJ did to his looks was strange and Sharpton responded with a "no"...he was being dishonest. I liked MJ's music and think that he should get his due for what he accomplished from a pop cultural standard but he can not get a pass for many of the things that O'Reilly brought up in the clip. A man that went through great lengths to have White children, whiten his features and ran away from having children with any Black DNA (if we are to be HONEST) was not the second coming of El-hajj Malik Al-Shabbaz. Again, if we are going to be 100% honest and correct...O'Reilly in this instance asked some tough questions that Sharpton and the victim merchants refuse to answer. Nobody was "schooled"....perhaps "fooled" on the part of Sharpton toward his gullible constituents. Let's stop trying to be right and try to go for righteousness.

MJ's desire to be lighter is very revealing from a psychological perspective. If nothing else, it provided the rest of the world a glimpse into the effects of internalized, subconscious conditioning that would cause us to feel that being Black is somehow an undesirable thing. Remember the white doll, black doll experiment conducted in Iowa some years ago? The phenomenon is real and tragic.
I suspect that all Blacks suffer from it to some degree or another. MJ's case was just an extreme one. It would take an awfully uncritical person to not see that Michael was acting out these issues of the mind in the decisions he made. Black women who have taken to straightening their hair, dying it blond or putting on wigs with different hair texture than their natural serves as yet another evidentiary exhibit.

CC..you are correct and we will get into this on our show this Sunday at 7pm. I have said on many occasions that there is a little MJ in all of us. You encapsulated the post traumatic slave syndrome rather succinctly. I guess one could say that it is a variation of the Stockholm syndrome....

Nobody is trying to be right or righteous,,,,all I want is some BALANCE when it comes to treatment which the media is lacking in this department. They damn near talk about him like he was some kinda extra terrestrial,,,,not a human being.
I'm not disputing the fact that YES Mike did suffer from "slave mentality" probably more than the avarage black man and as you know this mess has been ingrained in us for generations. It will take a long time to remove that conditioning. But then again, who doesn't? Every human being in general have to cope with their insecurities by whatever method they use, be it healthy or otherwise. It just in MJ's case, his insecurities were deep and his methods were "unhealthy", unfortunately.
That being said, Bill accused Al of giving a "narrow minded definition" but yet he came across as one dimensional, condescending and even hypocritical(A WHITE couple can adopt African kids but an African American CAN'T adopt white kids?).
What is he trying to accomplish? The old "Stay in your place, nigger" argument that he can't say bluntly? I bet he wasn't asking "When Frank Sinatra died, did you guys find his relationship with the Mafia abit too fishy"?
I don't agree with MJ's lifestyle but I don't HAVE to simply because I'm not in authority to pass judgements when god knows I have demons of my own to deal with,,,,and that really goes for the rest.
Al was focusing on the positive aspects of MJ for the sake of respect, Bill was trying to beat a dead horse that has already been beaten for the PAST whole 15 years. Should these issues be addressed? Of course, I'm not naive, but it doesn't have to revolve around that "argument" ALL THE TIME,,,,,there's more to Mike than JUST THAT, contrary to what they believe.

Well Harlepolis, you're more than welcome to stop by the show this Sun at 7pm eastern to hash this out further. If you are a frequent visitor to this blog and/or our show we are really trying to elicit correction from people of color pretty much in the same vein as Dr. Cosby. We know what O'Reilly is about and I say that even though this blog has a conservative bent. But we can not always be sensitive when someone speaks the truth. I thought that your description of Rev Sharpton handing it to O'reilly was inaccurate because his questions were legitimate. Should MJ get his due in the same way as Elvis?.....definitely, but let's not exalt him to Civil rights leader status....the only way we can shake of the mental shackles of slavery is to start to admit SOME of our dysfunction. We have to stop playing the victim card and stop victimizing each other. Sharpton, Dyson and rev jackson all have been selling the black community a victimization mindset essentially absolving the community from personal responsibility....Again, tell the COMPLETE truth about MJ...protect his legacy and then move on to more serious matters....

I'm ALL for the truth too. And believe it or not I'm not a fan of eithr Al nor Jesse(Can't comment about Dyson because some of his teachings aren't self-victimizing) because they represent a sophisticated version of modern day Uncle Toms.
But I won't be woman enough if I didn't at least applaud him for addressing the media and their mistreatment of MJ during the time of his passing.
Again, I'm not at all against addressing the issues & conditions that Mike suffered from ESP when there're alot of our kids look up to him,,,,,all I'm saying is there's a place & time for that. And untill then, I hope to see some balance when it comes to his treatment.
And I've been a big lurker of both of your site & blog(this is my 2nd time addressing that ) Any stan of Mr.Prince Nelson Roger knows what the clock on the wall says, in my book.

Which is in aspect that has not really been discussed by anyone.
