The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module

Gravatar Thanks! I feel better now about my Gardi Gras Terry Pratchett binge yesterday....

But seriously, you might pay a little attention to how Lent discipline affects your writing. I often find my writing is influenced by other forms of appetite, not just the merits of what I'm reading.

Gravatar I'm sorry, I won't be commenting anymore, because I just died of laughing.

Gravatar Interesting, Xena. I will try to look for that.

Or is that a subtle hint that I forgot to spell-check this post?

Gravatar Subtle hints aren't my forte, D.G.

Gravatar I think your true calling is in writing bodice-ripping romance novels

Sara

Gravatar Hi Deej! Love your blog! Any man who loves fanfic is a man after my own heart. I just completed a story (almost a novella) that was a real labor of love for me, in which two of the greatest heroes of classic comics, pulp, and old-time radio join forces: Superman and The Shadow. However, being mindful of your promise to abstain from fiction for Lent, I don't want to be an occasion of sin for you. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll send you the URL after Easter.

Gravatar Sure, Niall. Go ahead and send it on.

I confess I once wrote an entire fan fiction novel based on Bone, and though a number of people told me they enjoyed it, I removed it from the Internet after some thought because it is, technically, a copyright violation.

As mentioned before on here, I rather think provisions should be made in the laws for fan works, provided that they aren't produced for profit, but alas, no such exception exists. I also appreciate creators like Mike Mignola who enjoy seeing others' interpretations of their work and aren't overprotective.

Gravatar Sara, the most hardcore I'm willing to go in my writing is a makeout scene, but I can occasionally wax sappy about unrequited love and similar subjects. I admit I have a soft heart for such fluff and am known to tear up at love stories.

Gravatar aww, Deej, you sap.

Gravatar "But personally, I think fan fiction is the greatest compliment to an artist's work; it proves that he has built something so wonderful, it invigorates imaginations in a way that demands responsive creative output."

Most books I read have that effect on me. Only I don't bother to write anything down, thus saving the world what would probably be a lot of verbose, rambling (let me admit it) fan fiction. And I don't like fan fiction (oddly enough).

Histor

Gravatar Same here, Histor, though things I read certainly influence my non-fan fiction work. The only time I really felt compelled to write fan fiction was after I finished Bone.
