The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module

During the mid-'80's, just a few years before I was born, my Dad started taping kung-fu movies off of late night TV. I grew up watching "The Five Deadly Venoms"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077559/ "The Kid With The Golden Arm" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079372/ and "The Crippled Avengers" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Cri...ippled_Avengers

I still enjoy a few of these movies, for the over-the-top, cartoony choreography if anything else. The Crippled Avengers english dub is actually quite good, except for this one awkward miscue. In the beginning of the film, three martial artists invade the houae of a man who is a master of Tiger-style kung fu. Just to show they mean business they kill his wife and cripple his son, cutting off his hands. The kid starts bawling and sobbing in an incredibly annoying voice, instead of howling in agony like you would if someone chopped off your hands! When his dad finally arrives kills all three of the other with one special strike from his style, he goes to his son. The voice is barely shaky for God's sake! His arms are still bleeding, and he sounds like someone just stole his lolipop! It just shows how bad these things could get.

If you want to a simple martial arts flick with awesome action scenes, check out "Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior" starring Tony Jaa, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368909/ a fighter who specializes in Muay Thai fighting, and like his idol Jackie Chan, does all his stunts without the assistance of CGI or wires. You have to see tthe movie's first chase scene through the streets of Bangkok, the moves he pulls have to be seen to be believed. Forget about the plot, it's so cliched it may as well be non-existent, except for some interesting character development.

Gravatar Sounds great! And did you by chance catch the completely gratuitous wire-fu in the Victorian werewolf "Dr. Who" in the current US season? Evil,centuries-old wire-fu monks (briefly disguised as Western monks) involved with an eeeeevil and largely incoherent plot?

Gravatar Sigh--no Hellboy I anywhere in town...everyone must be getting caught up in anticipation of the new release...

Deej--did you receive an email from me?? I think my email is acting funny as I'm not receiving a bunch of stuff...and of course all the spam emails I DON'T want to receive...

Gravatar Great review! I'll have to put this on my list of movies to see somewhere down the line.

Speaking of reviews though, I was patient when you went away for the fourth, and even more so when you were out in the field working, but now I've actually seen a movie before you review it. What's up with that?? Were you so upset with the movie that you decided to forgo reviewing it?

Gravatar ...check out "Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior" starring Tony Jaa...

I've seen it. Jaa is indeed impressive, though he has all the charisma and acting talent of a wooden post. The autorickshaw chase was indeed cool, but the directing in that movie annoyed the heck out of me. I got tired of watching each of Jaa's impressive moves five times.

Ah, Christina, you must be talking about Hancock; yes, I missed reviewing that in a timely manner because I was completely occupied over the entire 4th weekend, and because I had no Internet for the following nine days. Okay, okay, I'll try to work that in here somewhere, but it seems to me everyone who's going to see it probably has already.
