The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module

Gravatar Yes - Lent arrives surprisingly early this year - we've just had Candlemas!!!

here's an explanation:

with other resources on this site.

Gravatar that makes me sad. Soo not telling you what I'm giving up for Lent after that. Good luck with your readathon.

Don't drink Fanta, because it makes you want to dance and wear bright colors. ha.

Gravatar Giving up fiction?? You are so hardcore.......

Gravatar What a wonderful idea! I usually give up secular books and music for Lent focus more on spiritual books and music.

Gravatar Thanks, Mr. Peters. Good idea, Esther. Don't be sad, Mary--we'll be back with more reviews come Easter season.

Anybody joining me? Anybody?

Gravatar aaarrrgghhhh! I mean, I hadn't decided what to do for Lent yet and such a blatant invitation is the usual level of subtlety God has to use on me. So yes, I'll join you in giving up fiction.....but I'll pass on Josephus. I was thinking of a very close study of all the RCIA rites instead. Maybe a little more Cyril of Jerusalem, too.

Gravatar I just figured out that with my copy, I will have days to spare if I read 28 pages of Josephus a day. That doesn't seem like such a harsh commitment, really. I'll probably have time left over at the end of Lent to read some other nonfiction--though I probably just put my foot in it by saying that, and come Easter you'll find me only halfway through the Jewish War.

Anybody want to read the Catechism for Lent? I think that took me about five months when I did it, but I read other things simultaneously.

Gravatar Josephus..sounds intriguing. I am not familiar with this branch of literature but I am willing to take the leap upon your recommendation. I will scour the local libraries and bookstores for a copy. Right now us Carmelites are embroiled in St. John of the Cross--The Living Flame of Love. I would like some dessert with my meat please??
The Catechism is a bit much for Lent...however I usually try to catch Fr Corapi's commentary on it on EWTN on Sunday evenings. Very enlightening.

( I think you might know me as the gal with the SKS

Gravatar SKS...SKS...oh dear, I'm terrible with acronyms...oh yes, the Russian carbine.

You may be interested to know I'm leaning toward a .50-caliber Barrett M99 for that sniper rifle. Besides being huge and wicked-cool-looking, it has the features I think would be appropriate for the weapon of this particular character. For one thing, it's a bolt-action and I believe it holds only one round, both of which seem best for what I'm after.

So you know, Josephus is one of those great ancient historians. His work has often held an honored place on many Christians' bookshelves next to their Bibles. His Jewish Antiquity is a recounting of the history of the world from Creation to Roman times, and his Jewish War is the only eye-witness account of the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. His complete works make for a hefty tome (in fact, I believe the Catechism would be shorter and less dense), so if you want to finish by Easter, I strongly suggest getting your copy fast.

Gravatar I picked up my copy tonight from Weber State University Library..it's copyright date is 1960 but is translated by Whiston so should be close. The page numbers may be different from your copy. I am ready to start when you are!! It has been along time since I have done a guided reading such as this so feel free to ask questions to challenge my mind Where should I post my commentary?? Also I do not write quite as elegantly as you but hopefully my comprehension and understanding comes through.

One round is NEVER a good choice...you have to reload and that takes time...because as soon as you fire EVERYONE comes looking for YOU...however--it's YOUR story and you can make the firearm do whatever you want Take some of the way cool looking rifles and have Q do his magic on them For the ULTIMATE in coolness for your character....bandoliers

Happy Ash Wednesday

Sara

Gravatar Feel free to post anywhere. I'll mention where I am in the book as I go (though probably I won't give an update every single day, as the monotony would start to bore the readers). You can always talk about the book in the comment sections, partcularly in those posts about the Read-a-Thon. You can also send me an e-mail (you'll find all three of our addresses in the sidebar to the right) and I'll then post your comments to the blog.

I will begin reading Josephus tomorrow with the beginning of Lent! Just so you know, the copy I have begins with his autobiography, continues with the Antiquities, and then goes to the War and finishes up with Againt Apion, the extract on Hades, and Whiston's appendices. I will be reading the whole thing, in order, cover to cover minus the index. Your copy may have the books in a different order.

I know, I know, but I see this kid panicking to reload, dropping his bullets as he's running from one room or roof to the next, and having angsty, early pubescent interior monologues while he's at it. Besides, it's a real gun, so I have an excuse, right?
