On the blog at FIRST THINGS, the editor notes with sadness the death of a sci-fi writer named Disch. I've never heard of him--can anyone here enlighten me?

Thomas M. Disch you will probably know best for The Brave Little Toaster.
Here's a listing of his books from Fantastic Fiction

Thanks for the link. Never heard of Brave Little Toaster, either, I'm afraid. I think what I meant was: was he any good?

Xena, the Brave Little Toaster: A Bedtime Story for Small Appliances was one of the most hilarious and sweet short stories I have ever read. I am very old, so I have read a lot. I read it in 1980 in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. It was one of their most popular stories ever. It was made into an animated film in 1987. It wasn't really a horrid adaptation but it wasn't as good as the original story. But then, when is a movie ever as good as the book. If you can find the story, read it.
