I've tried to avoid reading about this latest travesty, but from what little I've picked up you are both right. In the remake it's no more Mr. Nice Klaatu.

What do you have againts Keanu Reeves?! Granted he is an atrocious actor and has only one facial expression... but... well... okay... Harrison Ford and John Wayne were not exactly Laurence Olivier either.
And, I thought he was actually pretty decent as a brooding villain in Much Ado... Kenneth Branagh always throws the token over-rated American Actor into his films.
Is this because Che' Lovell once said you look like Keanu Reeves because you wore sun glasses? Just curious.

First Things has an online blog and 'an article a day' which usually does not duplicate material in the actual print 10x/year highbrow magazine. It is a major think-piece meeting place for orthodox Christians (mainly Catholic and evangelical, but open to others) and Jews. Good book reviews, too. I can't recommend it highly enough.

If I am reading the article correctly and it describes the original movie correctly, would the following be an accurate description?
1. Earth--or at least humanity--solves all its problems through destruction.
2. This could be a problem for the rest of the galaxy.
3. The solution to this problem is the destruction of Earth--or at least humanity.
I know that the Earth isn't destroyed in the end, but am I the only one who sees the glaring dissonance? It's hard to take an alien messiah seriously when the only reason he has for coming to us is that he and his are just like us, only on a larger scale.

I just noticed that D.G.D. thinks the article got the plot wrong and that Klaatu did not come to Earth to destroy it. I fail reading comprehension forever.

The plot is similar to Plan 9's. There the Aliens were trying to frighten the Earthlings into not making Solaranite or the "light bomb" which would end up obliterating the entire universe.
