The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module

Gravatar The only manga I've read is Rumiko's Mermaid series (Mermaid Forest, Mermaid Scar, Mermaid, etc.--I'm curious if you've read those and what you think). From this review, I don't think I'll be looking to read any more manga any time soon....

From your summary--what does "frequent fanservice" mean?

Anyway, I really enjoy your blog!

Gravatar Fan service or fanservice is gratuitous sexual content inserted for the apparent purpose of pleasing the fans.

Gravatar To elaborate, it usually consists of female characters showing off certain areas of their bodies.

Gravatar No more manga reading based on this review? That's funny. I meant the review to be a largely positive one, but ah well.

Manga really is too diverse to judge based on one work. It is the dominant Japanese medium. Manga range from wholesome children's stories to hardcore pornography and everything in between. Reading it requires the same intelligent discernment as anything else.

Gravatar "Furthermore, though Maison Ikkoku spends a lot of time maturing Yusaku into an adult, when he spends most of volume 15 waffling about proposing to Kyoko after he has slept with her, he appears to be a cad, especially since we have watched Mitaka dutifully marry a woman because he might have slept with her while drunk. Maison Ikkoku is much too powerful to be wrecked by this, but it, like its characters, is cheapened and compromised."

I strongly disagree. At no point does Yusaku ever not want to marry Kyoko. He's worried she won't want to marry him, because of his limited financial future. This may appear irrational to the reader, but it's perfectly in keeping with his established character.

Gravatar Indeed, Dave, he never swerves on wanting to marry Kyoko. My complaint is that he continues to waffle at this point. I was hoping he could be more proactive by the end (having become more mature), and less of a cad, too.
