The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module

Gravatar Nice list. When you read the book on women deacons, be aware that the situation West & East is different. The study of women Deacons in the East is explained by Fitzgerald and excellent.

Did you get bonus prayers from the monastery?

Gravatar I wonder if the Mormons had any thoughts about helping out a Catholic monastery. If they did, they probably kept those thoughts to themselves.

I'm not sure what you mean. The certainly knew it was a Catholic monastery.

Gravatar My godfather and I were at an Eastern Catholic bookstore today, and noticed the Deaconesses book. I think I said, "Oh, that's going to be nice and non-controversial."

Gravatar The small town of Huntsville is very close-knit...the monastery has been part of that community for a long time.. and in typical small-town style the neighbors help each other out. So in this case the Mormon helpers were just being neighborly. Many hands make light work, especially considering the amount of damage that was done to the outbuildings...

I stop by the monastery from time to time....they do have a nice little gift shop and WONDERFUL honey. And as you can tell by Deej's photos the scenery is lovely. I didn't make it up there this winter...too much snow..But I am running out of honey...so will be up there soon. The monks also do WONDERFUL chant of the Liturgy of the Hours... They DO need vocations though so if anyone knows of young men who like to farm and take care of cows as well as pray, that's the place to be.

Deej, I meant that I have the impression that a certain pronounced anti-Catholic bias is built into the Mormon tradition. You would certainly get that idea from reading their accounts of the history of Western Christianity. I recall skimming one of their religion textbooks when I worked as a cataloging librarian. They spend a lot of time talking about Jesus andf the apostles and then skip to Wyclif, Luther, and Joseph Smith--as if nothing of much significance happened in between. I think one of the foundational principles of Mormonism is that the true Christian faith was "taken away" after the days of Jesus and the apostles and only restored to its fullness by the prophet Joseph Smith. This view is a direct contradiction to the Catholic position that the Catholic Church is the one true Church founded by Christ and established upon the Rock of Peter which has taught the same essential truths for 2,000 years.

Gravatar It's a pity Snuffles chose not to come along. His fire-breathing talents would have been useful disposing of the debris after you finished cleaning up.

Oh, well, yes it is. It's also built into the Protestant tradition, but that doesn't everyone can't be civil and help out with community projects. Mormon missionaries are well known for their community service.

In my experience, something similar can be found in Reformed accounts of Church history, which jump from Jesus to St. Paul to St. Augustine to Luther to Calvin.

All non-Catholic religions contradict the Catholic position that the Catholic Church is the one true Church! My own view, which I am repeatedly surprised to find is unusual, is that so-called "triumphalism" is right and natural and healthy for any vigorous religion, false or otherwise. Civil interaction between religions, which has acquired the unfortunate label "ecumenism," should be characterized by mutual respect, by robust debate, and by vigorous proselytism. I tend to get impatient with Catholics who are angry when non-Catholic missionaries show up on their doorstep. If it were not for honest triumphalism combined with evangelistic efforts, I wouldn't be Catholic today.

Gravatar Having lived in Utah since Dec 92 I have encountered what I would call "If you ain't Mormon you ain't sh*t"..It runs from neighbors to coworkers to the average joe you see on the street who sees your crucifix and promptly walks the other way. Granted--some neighborhoods are better than others...my last neighborhood in the older part of town was wonderful...maybe because we were all poor and helped each other out. But I DID live in one neighborhood where my house and car was spray painted with rude sayings, blasphemy to the Blessed Mother, and vandalized, caught the kids who did it, and their parents, their bishop, even the cops, did NOTHING about it. Their solution?? "Well, maybe if you converted to the the LDS Church, then these things wouldn't happen to you." I promptly moved out of that neighborhood...

I enjoy entertaining missionaries....I always invite them to pray the Rosry with me first before they begin their talk....they usually find that they have a more pressing appointment to attend to... But it plants a seed...

I guess I just haven't experienced any of that.
