The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module
Part of our Secular Carmelite discipline is 1/2 hour of mental prayer daily...quiet time away from the busyness of everyday life where you can just "be" with God. It does take a bit getting used to--we are so used to having "noise" all the time-- but now I look forward in anticipation at the evening of my day to this quiet period. Very much like Adoration except for me it is at home.
Modern day life is indeed too loud, too busy , assault on the senses in all areas. The Holy Father is very wise. Turn off the TV, radio, telephone,find a quiet place where you'll be undisturbed, preferably a comfortable chair. If you lie down you tend to fall asleep 
Then "Enjoy the Silence". You may only be able to do 5 minutes or so at a time, but it is a start. Try not to fall asleep either If you know any meditation or relaxation techniques now is a good time to use those. A mantra may help too. Or you can use this time for a Rosary or other devotion as long as it is calm and quiet. Try not to have any music or other noise/distraction. This is when my cats want to sit in my lap and I have to gently put them on the floor.
Sit down, calm and quiet.
Relax.
Crank the Led Zeppelin.

Yep that's cheating..although to TRUELY appreciate Led Zeppelin recreational pharmaseuticals are required
can't have it on the iPod either..
Well, maybe next Lenten I will work out to tuning out TV (but how could I
watch the Chesterton half hour on EWTN
on Sundays?).
For the moment I have given up vampires and Tanya Huff, and I miss them, though it is a good opportunity to reread John Lukacs.
(By the way, when Lenten is done, maybe I can get you started on a discussion of Tanya Huff and the Blood series?)
