The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module

Gravatar Amazing. If they had deliberately tried to find the most off-putting blurb that would ensure I never touched their production with a ten-foot bargepole, they couldn't have done better.

The 'Desperate Housewives' tag is bad enough, but the very first line here
"In book one, readers are introduced to Susan Mitchell, a modern-day soccer mom who longs to be a heroic woman of God." managed to turn me off completely, and I generally *like* religiously-themed fantasy/SF.

Is there some kind of iron-clad rule that Christian literature has to be completely unappealing? You know, along the lines of "If you make this book/film/album sound like it might be interesting, complex, fun, and richly suggestive, you'll end up in the deepest, darkest, hottest pit of Hell being prodded by extremely nasty demons with viciously sharp-tined pitchforks"?

Gravatar Judging from my recollections of the Jehovah's Witnesses, religious disapproval has very little effect on overall rates of teenage masturbation, let alone more interactive sexual activity and drunkenness...

But now that I have used the word 'masturbation' twice in one blog comment, I can die happy, and shall refrain from defending Eugene Peterson, who seems to be a smart guy, even if The Message is pretty darn annoying at times.

Gravatar Whether or not disapproving it changes things isn't the issue; whether or not it's immoral is.

Fuinseoig, I'll discuss the book in some detail when the blog tour rolls around; I already have plenty of comments to make, but I think I should restrain myself. Check back for updates. I agree that the press release doesn't pique my interest as much as it should, and I generally like fantasy/sf that drops ordinary people into extraordinary environments and situations.
