The Sci Fi Catholic Yak Module

Gravatar (Except of dialogue from Episode 1

Fr. M.: Do you feel... repentent, Punk?

Punk: (babbles incoherently)

Fr. M.: 'cause this here's a .44 Magnum... the most powerful absolvator ever made. Capable of taking your sin clean off. And in all the excitement, I can't remember if I absolved you five times, or six... So waddaya say, Punk? Do you feel repentent?

(Cut! Who writes this garbage? Next script! Sheesh...)

Gravatar Oh, I am so mad that Adult Swim now goes for its lame comedies instead of decent anime. To think that I had to stay up until 2 am to know how Blood+ ended.

We should badger them with letters until they brought anime back, and specially this one.

I need my anime!!!!

By the way, Father Bruiser and his team should take on the people who created The Big O and make them confess what the ending means.

Gravatar This can't turn out good. It just can't.

Histor

Gravatar So, I read & learned that Sr. Leah is in fact a Fransiscan (I should have guessed from the bluejeans), making the Mecha Battle Habit even more of a surprise for the recalcitrant sinner. Maybe she even cites Francis' respect for priests as she kicks the can of evildoers who diss Fr. Bruiser?

Gravatar What a riot!! Thanks!!

Gravatar I don't know about anyone else, but I'd kind of like to read this comic...

Gravatar Any illustrators out there want to take a stab at this?? It would be interesting to see several different "interpretations" of the characters.

Gravatar Man, I hate to repeat myself, but apparently my posts just aren't showing up. I was wondering if Snuffles could start a discussion on how modern Japanese portray Christianity, and how they have integrated the Western religious symbolism into their pop-culture. I offered two starting points: Hellsing http://www.amazon.com/Hellsing-1...s/dp/ 159307056X or Chrono Crusade http://www.amazon.com/Chrono-Cru...06766637&sr=1- 1 Ironically both mangas' plots involve secret organizations within the Catholic Church operating from the Vatican's control. It appears Dan Brown has stolen from more people than he knows about I think everyone would be interested to hear Snuffle's thoughts on the subject. Care to take up the challenge, Snuffles?
P.S. Yes I'm blegging, but this is the only Catholic blog I know that discusses anime/manga at all.
P.P.S. Yes, I did accidentally post something similar on the last blog entry by mistake. I've scheduled a meeting with my optometrist for next weeek.

Gravatar Oh, if anyone wants to illustrate, Sara, I'll gladly write script.

Thomas, that's a great discussion topic. I don't feel equipped to write on the subject right now, largely because I don't think it's justifiable to generalize about a culture's portrayal of anything--especially anything as complex as religion--from a few examples of its pop culture. I would feel safe discussing a few individual works, but I don't have the knowledge now for the broader discussion you're suggesting.

And if I had to start somewhere, it might be with Trigun. Man, I love Trigun.

Gravatar I love Trigun myself Snuffles. Sorry for being so hasty about stereotyping the Japanese. I do have great respect for them, and a minor interest in their history. If you want to read a great historical novel about Japanese society and at how they viewed the first Christian missionaries in the 17th century, I'd highly reccomend the novel "Shogun" by James Clavell,http://www.amazon.com/Shogun-James- Clavell/dp/0440178002 or the anime Rurouni Kenshin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Rur...Rurouni_kenshin I think you'd like Kenshin, because he is very similar to Vash. They are also both trying to redeem themselves and escape from tragic pasts, Kenshin moreso then Vash, because he has killed people directly and willingly.

Gravatar On the subject of the Vatican and manga, how about Trinity Blood? It also has vampires, and a Crusnik, which is a vampire that feeds on other vampires.

Lets hear it for Cardinal Catherine Sforza!
