Have you tried the Japanese euphenism for it, "servisu"? (Yeah, the new guy's being a smartass, but come on, who could resist?) It's needless stuff like this that really kill anime fans. Studios put *more* fanservice then what is contained in the raunchy the source material sometimes, which seems to be par for them. They show the real edgier stuff late at night, but then isn't that an indication of the quality of a show sometimes?

This pseudo-smartass humbly apologizes for the spelling mistakes found in the above post.
P.S. I'm going to be doing this alot...

Aw, c'mon, this is the Internet. We all make spelling mistakes here, and nobody has to apologize, especially in comment sections where nobody is exactly editing his work.

I think I'm aggravated in this case particularly because Espinosa doesn't need it and has demonstrated that he can produce excellent comics without it. Neotopia is probably his best work and The Courageous Princess is probably second, and if memory serves, they contain zero fanservice.

Also, I should add that when I say "fanservice," I'm referring to something that's usually pretty mild. I haven't even seen the really raunchy stuff you're talking about, though I've read about some of it. Susan Napier's essay on anime pornography is enough to nauseate me; I don't have much interest in watching it.

No, I would not recommend fighting in a miniskirt/panties. It's always good to have something that flows and doesn't strangle you or flash others when you move.
funny review. did you ever find that comic with the pregnant woman from Juno?

No, but I'll ask Snuffles if he knows about it. What was that called? Fruitful Nina or something?

Oh, I'm back. Snuffles says it was called Most Fruitful Yuki, and that it was apparently made up for the movie. In fact, there are Juno T-shirts with a picture of Yuki and the caption, "Lead with the belly, follow with the sword." I should think that means the title and character are owned by the filmmakers unless it's old enough to be public domain.
A little disappointing, kind of.

Hey, thanks for the encouragement!
But, if I might make a small confession, I sometimes watch the really raunchy shows for mainly two reasons: one, because I like to punish myself by cseeing for myself if it really *is* as bad as the reviews say it is, and two, because, frankly, I'm almost amazed at the sheer perversity of otakus (that's Japanese for "hardcore fan", to the uninitiated).
One of the biggest let downs in watching anime, is that you're only watching a partial adaptation of a manga that is incomplete at the time of production. If the manga in question is based on gags,is episodic, or is left open ended, then no problem. But if you're watching a sprawling epic only to see it be cut short, never to see the light of day again, it's a real bummer. One of the examples I know of is Rurouni Kenshin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Rur...Rurouni_Kenshin
P.S. Ask Snuffles to check out the manga when his reading list clears up, or have a look yourself.

I gotta be honest with you, I don't find those very good reasons. I figure there are too many good sf and fantasy novels to waste my time reading Gloriana. And I figure the world of manga and anime is too diverse to waste my time watching Legend of the Overfiend. I don't think either sf or manga is more likely to be disgusting than any other branch of art, but like other branches of art, it can contain stuff I don't need in my head. I've got enough problems in there already. Even John C. Wright says he gives up on any sf novel that turns too perverse for him, and that guy has an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre; I wish I knew as much as he's forgotten. Clearly we don't have to spend our time in the gutter to really get to know the subject.

Just, one last comment, and then we can drop the discussion. First, it must be said that I have this weird habit of making up excuses in my mind as I watch this stuff (believe I actually don't *like* to watch it), but many anime series seem to push more and more explicit scenes in anime, because they know that no matter how bad it is, we watch it out of sheer perverse curiousity. It isn't a good excuse, it was merely the reason I gave, which is very poor I'll admit.
Yeah, the esteemed Mr. Wright is the guru of all science fiction. At least you have sci-fi books crammed into your bookcase, mine is much smaller and not even filled

Well, it depends on your age, Thomas. When I was a wee graduate student, I could fit all the books I owned onto three modest shelves. Then I got more books, and more, and more, and more... Now my books don't fit into three seven-foot bookcases. I figure their count will double in a couple years.

I'm 20(since you implicitly inquired) going to be 21 in May, though you wouldn't know it cause I have a slight physical handicap, which means I haven't grown up with the usual priviledges and responsibilities of a normal person, and thus I probably wouldn't seem very mature for my age (my height doesn't help either). One of the best things about being my age was discovering Tolkien at the tender age of 14, and I only had to wait four months after finishing the trilogy for the "Fellowship of the Ring" to hit the big screen!

Seeing the movies right after the books would be cool.
I don't think my personal book collection was very large when I was 20.
