Thank you for a beautiful uplifting piece today!!! We are most likely closing our coffee shop so I can be a full time mom again. It took my mother getting cancer and me having my hands tied to a business to really appreciate what all I was missing. No garden this year, no picking garden for the little girls to make bouquets, just coffee, tea and laundry. I love coffee and tea, But I am more interested in growing, roasting and brewing for friends to come over and enjoy than to sell for unappreciative businessmen. In the same way that I am more interested in my children learning than them being taught. Sometimes we let the world get in our view, and then if we are lucky, we can find a beautiful journal to read and inspire us. Have a blessed day!! Mamanutt

Gravatar Mamanutt,

I know we've talked a bit about your decision to open a coffee shop, and it's very interesting, because my husband and I very, very seriously considered opening a coffeehouse in our neighborhood. It was by a very strange twist of fate that we didn't actually do it; a business we were consulting actually signed a contract for the place right out from under us. My thoughts alternate between the positive and the negative "what ifs." What if it failed (The one that went in there did, but I don't think they were firmly grounded in the community)? What if it were a great success and I were busy every day of the week? What if I would have loved it? What if I would have hated it?

Now, my husband and I are talking about some major life changes, which may include a search for a different job for him. We feel so compelled to run a family business, but we don't know exactly what to do, and we have no start-up cash for the ideas we have (guest cabins, herb farm, etc.).

So, it's hard to know which will be the better road, until it's been traveled. And, even then, our memories are affected by those rose-colored glasses called "nostalgia," where we only remember the sweetness and we block out all that was wrong with our lives "back then."

Thanks for your input, Mama. I still want to swing by and see you and your place sometime.

Carrie, thank you. I appreciate the kind words.

Gravatar Hey Thicket Dweller -

Got your comment on my blog - knew who it was from INSTANTLY (mom told me she saw you at the arts conference - so I cheated). Great to read through your site and find out what's up in hO-Hi-hO. We just got back last night (from Akron). Still can't believe your kids - way too cool. Drop me an email some time (you can email me from my blog).
