I don't have a Greek lexicon handy, but I thought "marturos" meant "witness", and that Justin acquired this designation because he was martyred, not the other way around. Surnames (other than patronymics, eg "bar-Jonah") seem to have been uncommon among Jews and Greeks, unlike Romans, of the New Testament era...?
