Mate, good post but only half the story about these incredible bands, particularly God. You didn't mention the devastation meted on the band by heroin, no utterance of the immense pressure placed on them by overzealous money grabbers and certainly no mention of the blatant lack of interest in them while they were alive. Their influence is not felt in Melbourne. Most say, gee nice song. Who sings this?
Invasion Day is for the apologists. Australia would not be anywhere near the great country it is if it were not for immigration. Coming from a Pom, I thought you'd realise this.
Cheers.

Blackbird, good point. I have told far less than half the story of all these great bands, especially GOD, who have never had the wide respect and recognition they deserve. My introductions to the songs posted on Diddy Wah are intended as an overview to give the music some context and readers are always encouraged to check out the links for more info. In the Melbourne rock scene I knew, Tim Hemensley, in particular, was highly regarded and I'm sure still is and I'd be very surprised and saddened if most Melbourne rock bands couldn't identify 'My Pal'.
As far as Invasion Day goes, well this mp3 blog isn't really the forum for that discussion which is why I only mentioned its use in passing without expanding on the reasons for it. But as you've brought it up...I believe judging the past by today's morals is largely futile but feel that there's a lot hurt that needs to be healed with regards to Indigenous Australians and what started 200 years ago. And if seeing the First Fleet for what it actually was helps, and I think it does, then that's how I'm going to see it.

Hi
The sun is shinging here in Melbourne, PBS is on the radio and it is looking like a good Australia Day.
Thanks for the time and effort you put into Diddywah. It's much appreciated.
Cheers and enjoy the day.

Being a cover whore (and I am), I came to appreciate Stevie Wright (and particularly "Evie, Pt. 1") through Suzi Quatro (and later the Wrights). Sadly, like the original, neither of their versions hit big in the states.
Thanks for the post - In your honor, I'm going to treat my office mates to all three parts of Evie from the Wrights this morning.
