Please stay on topic. Please don't be asses.

Gravatar buck up, digby. They *lost*. Plan B will be available.

Watts proved what the rest of us have been saying for a long long time: 'pro-life' is all about punishing people for having, and enjoying, sex.

Gravatar Lets face it.

How you feel about sex is a microcosm for how you feel about power.

The extreemes are people who want to have every single technilogical tool available to them so that they have the maximum freedom to fuck like rabbits without any consequences whatsoever, such as getting sick or having children, and people who want sex to have the maximum amount of risk by removing all mechanisms to mitigate unwanted consequences.

The difference is basically whether you want sex to be a means of control.

And anyone who wants sex to be a means of control, in my book, is a closet mysoginist at best, and probably a borderline pedophile as well.

Think about it.

~

Gravatar Seemed to me from the trancript that Watts exposed himself as a credulous bigot on national tv, which has to be a good thing.

And I agree, what's important is that that American women now have access to Plan B. So Watts and his friends can rail incoherently and pointlessly all they want - the sensible people won.

Result! Onwards and upwards we go...

Gravatar The extreemes are people who want to have every single technilogical tool available to them so that they have the maximum freedom to fuck like rabbits without any consequences whatsoever, such as getting sick or having children, and people who want sex to have the maximum amount of risk by removing all mechanisms to mitigate unwanted consequences.

So, what, the middle ground is that there should be some unwanted consequences for having sex?

We should want tools to reduce the unwanted side-effects of having sex, but we shouldn't want them to work too well?

I do not understand people who think it would be some kind of Huxleyan dysphoria if a person could make a decision whether or not to have sex on its own merits, without the fear an extraneous random catastrophe.

Gravatar I guess Republicans want to force unwanted pregnancies on women under 18 because they can't vote. A look into the eyes of darkness.

Gravatar It's ludicrous to think that anybody could possibly take those lying creeps seriously.

Gravatar JC, the guy whose own father dissed him as a chicken kissing Colonel Sander's ass.

I don't know if I can handle anymore of this, either. I'm learning that I don't have an outrage/irony meter, I have a volcano that's ready to party like it's A.D. 79.

Gravatar Yesterday, they said life begins with conception.

Today, they say life begins with intercourse.

Tomorrow, they will tell us life begins with dinner and a movie.

Gravatar CNN Political Analyst JC Watts

Very compelling and persuasive analysis. Brilliant. I'm going to read it again. Thank you, Wolf Blitzer and CNN for having a top gun political analyst deconstruct this complicated issue for us. I especially like the part about the left selectively using "experts" to support only those views that are compatible with their beliefs. I have to admit he got us on that one. Darn it.

Gravatar Only in America is this controversial. This has been available in the civilized world (where I am fortunate to live) for a long time. Can the disproportionately loud segment of the US that has a problem with this type of contraception, or contraception in general, can post-natal abortions be performed on these mouth breathers? Blitzer too. He is just annoying.

Republican dilemma: a black gay liberal fetus.

Gravatar Dover Bitch,
Manny of us know that life begins at forty.

Gravatar CNN has on an ineffective pantomime liberal and we're supposed to shoot digby one of the most effective and astute voices on the leftist blogosphere?

I see you had a hard month too, digby.

Isn't it just simply amazing how the media, with all of the people around the country who actually could tell you something, people who have made actual studies of the issues involved in so many ways would choose JC Watts and Bill Press to gas on about every issue under the sun? In this case TWO MALE make that MALE AS IN HAVE A PENIS AND NOT A UTERUS media empty buckets to bang on about this issue.

Isn't it wonderful how the 24hr cabloids have done so much to increase the awareness of the People of the United States?

Gravatar Yeah, what this country needs is a bunch of babies raised by sex cult girls--we're running out of cannon fodder.

I hear a Billy Joel riff coming on:
"Sex cult girls living in a plan B world..."

Gravatar I should also remind people that Watts has multiple children out of wedlock.

Gravatar "Experts on the war that says evil people are trying to kill us"--he means Richard Clarke, doesn't he? And who ignored him when his hair was on fire? Wasn't it that barbecue cook guy?

Gravatar I am sick and tired of hearing the lies about plan B. Plan B -- as its name indicates -- is a contraceptive, not an abortifacient.

What part of "it does not work if the woman is already pregnant" don't these clowns understand?

Gravatar "Yesterday, they said life begins with conception.

Today, they say life begins with intercourse."

"What part of "it does not work if the woman is already pregnant" don't these clowns understand?"

It is male ego. When the male puts the sperm in there the deed is done. She is pregnant, Don't let those pesky biologists fool you.

Gravatar Devil's Advocate--The part where these clowns don't get to use the threat of pregnancy as a means of controlling women's private lives.

I honestly don't get anyone who wouldn't be pleased at the news of a good contraceptive. (Especially Watts, who has at least one illegitimate kid.)

Gravatar Dover Bitch-

I wish I'd made that comment. Kudos.

Gravatar Teen sex cults?

OH! ...fraternities...

Gravatar J.C Watts, like the anti abortion crowd he represents, apparently believes fervently that when a male ejaculates human life is created. That awesome power to create life with one's penis is why males are the superior gender. Indeed,it may be the only reason. But reason enough. Women, after all, are merely the flower pot in which the seed is placed until he is able to survive on his own. This is not a notion to be taken lightly. After all it has been the prevailing philosophical view since antiquity until the unfortunate discovery of the ovum in the early 19th century.

Gravatar Come on, if you see J.C. Watts is going to speak, you KNOW it's going to be a bunch of drivel.

Calling out to my fellow Okies out there...is the any video, or maybe transripts, of Watts and Barry Switzer talking politics out there? Switzer's turned into a bit of a kingmaker here in OK, at least w. the yellow-dog Dem faction.

Gravatar Allegedly, teen girl slang for what used to be "hunks" is now lollipops, which has to say something about teenaged sexual mores.

Gravatar sylviansylvian, don't forget about ol JC and the "walking around" bribes he took back in OK. The bribes are on tape, the investigation was shushed.

And yeah, those three penii opining on the moment of conception being the moment of intercourse is just outstandingly ridiculous.

And I wish I did have that Switzer/Watts thing at hand. I don't remember the details clearly.

Gravatar JC Watts should have been Shrubs running mate, 'cause those are the 2 emptiest suits in America. And CNN. Calling this private label simp a "political analyst" is like calling shrub a spellbinding orater. He even manages to plug the Iraqi debacle while supposedly talking about contraception - but he's actually talking about abortion - and the "evil people" reference sure sounds like Shrub, so he's holding up Shrub as a war expert. Yes, the only war expert in history who has the nickname "awol". Watts should consider getting a suit covered in GOP talking point labels like "abortion bad", "war good", "evil people bad"; that way he could just point to the appropriate label during any debate. It would be much more efficient, and require no more thought.

Gravatar This is so stupid because the kids already know about combinations of birth control pills that have the same effect as Plan B. Kids in high schools share all kinds of other drugs. To act as if the kids have not been sharing Plan B already is denial. If as expected Plan B causes a huge drop in the numbers of abortions, will that somewhat defuse abortion as a political issue?

Gravatar Now I remember why I quit watching TV.

Gravatar I want to see all these folks, like Watts, asked how many children they have and whether they use any type of contraceptive to manage the size of their families. The hyprocisy of these idiots is palpable and yet FOOLS like those I'm watching right now agreeing with a Chief Justice from RI on WJ about Lincoln's suspension of the writ of Habeous Corpus during the Civil War being analagous with Bush's actions during this "WAR ON TERROR" just line up to kiss the butt of anyone who says "I'm a Republican". FINALLY a caller who is taking this idiot to task!

Gravatar Many, many years ago, there was a made for TV movie called Earth 2, about an space station with an international staff that became the first nation in space.

One of the things that would happen during their citizen\'s televised political debates would be a box appearing under the person's image that would light up with the words \"Emotional appeal\", \"Logical inconsistency\", etc. as they were talking.

Pity we don't have anything like that today, as it would probably been flashing in block letters BULLSH*T a half second after Watt's began talking.

Gravatar 'Digby, I know you don't promote from the comments but Dover Bitch and Pseudonymous have really made us all proud today. Great comments. ( I also want to second Dover Bitch's point and add that there were some surveys done a number of years ago that included the interesting "fact" that a not insignificant percentage of males thought that they had a "right" to sex after spending some specified amount of money on a date--the amount that sticks in my head is something like 15 dollars but it was a long time ago. After spending that much money a guy was entitled to expect his date to put out. And if she didn't, she ought to expect to have the price of dinner brought up as an excuse to rape her. With humans like this in the gene pool we can, indeed, expect that male control over female reproductive decisions begins with "dinner and a movie.")

Gravatar As if we had any doubt that this was all about controlling women, not about protecting children.

Speaking of which, it's a zygote, not a child!

Gravatar Thank you devils advocate for making the point that this is a contraceptive and not an abortificant. Pushing the lie that this is an abortificant is ridiculous but it does push the christoban meme down the road. This entire pr campaign is about the control of female sexuality by males who I wouldn't trust to watch my dogs. I used to believe that empirical evidence would shut these idiots down but....well....that is so 1990's. This should not be a political debate at all but rather a medical/scientific discussion where you actually have someone on who understands the way Plan B works and not some christoban apologist.

Gravatar Women, after all, are merely the flower pot in which the seed is placed until he is able to survive on his own.

Chad, that's it exactly!

Gravatar Gaah! Baby Jesus is vewy angwy!

You are taking rights out of the hands of women, and putting them... in the hands of women!!

You... you... ill-mentioned perpetrators, you!

Gravatar Ya know with sick A holes like these guys I am ready to give the evil guys trying to kill us another look. They might actually have something going for them, we sure don't if this is the level of intelligent discourse. Damn this country is so screwed. I can't wait until the McMansions are empty and the streets are filled with the wailing of the repugs and liberals crying over the chinese takeover of their new colony. After all they will own the place and we will have to work just to stay here. Think any other country will let any US citizen in?

Gravatar Well there it is. We are being represented by 12 year olds. That explains a lot.

Gravatar The extreemes are people who want to have every single technilogical tool available to them so that they have the maximum freedom to fuck like rabbits without any consequences whatsoever . . .

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Gravatar The only acceptable republican contraceptive is one that prevents intercourse.

Gravatar every sperm is sacred, every sperm is great...

Gravatar Life begins with the decision not to behave like an overbearing wingnut Republican.

Gravatar Wolf also asked them what they thought about the new procedure for extracting stem cells without destroying the blastocyst and JC said he's against it because "they may be extracting a twin." unfuckingbelievable.

Gravatar The job the US media is doing is excellent! Dumbing down the people while keeping our attention away from those things that are real news and propagandizing the wars is tough work. Ever up to the challenge, the 5 owners of most of the media has done a fine job of keeping us ignorant.

Gravatar JC Watts was a football player, right? Wide receiver or something?

Well that certainly qualifies him to offer his opinion on reproductive biology.

Gravatar levonorgestrel prevents ovulation. It is taken as soon as possible after to prevent an egg being released as sperm amy live for up to 7 days. So the sooner it is taken the better. The birth controll pill is taken daily to keep a level of hormone to prevent ovulation constant. This is emergency contraception birth control is ongoing. JC is no longer a congressman and is irrelevant.

Gravatar what makes me mad is the recent ruling that a under 18 yr old boy with cancer could make a decision about his own medical care and fate, but girls under 18 are property of their parents and may not be allowed to make a decision about their health and their fate.

Gravatar good job by Bill Press.

Gravatar What I want to know is, why is the media never making comparisons between what these right wingers/fundamentalists/anti-everything crowd wants, and what middle east extremists want?

It seems exactly the same to me.

Both groups want to control women.

Both groups want to make sex dirty unless it results in procreation within marriage.

Both groups want to make every woman feel like she HAS to be married (runnaway bride paranoia anyone?)

Both groups want religious law and morals to determine what freedoms people are entitled to.

Both groups foster group-think and not individuality.

Both groups belittle rape victims, hold up the virgin/whore mentality, and ignore other huges problems like incest and domestic abuse.

Both groups hate homosexuals.

Both groups consider males having more power and rights than females.

It's a very valid argument. Because we are dying over there, sweating over there, spending tax money like it's water, to somehow prevent the extremists from taking over, and yet we allow them to take over here?

Gravatar Great. Now that they can't pretend they're only "protecting babies" anymore, they're going to pretend they're deaf.

Gravatar Sigh. I was wondering what had happened to ol' J.C. He never fails to disappoint. I wouldn't have been surprised if the transcript closed with (WATTS: Bites head off live chicken, spits it at Bill Press.)

I suppose morons need their disjointed, cognitively dissonant voices heard too. It would just be nice if for once they'd use their indoor voice.

Gravatar What's knows this isn't an abortion, and that it prevents pregnancy and as such is a contreception. This is why Republicans hate Education, a more educated society would punch them in the face.

Gravatar Paging P. Z. Myers...

But who am I trying to kid? J. C. Watts is so enamored of his own ignorance that even P. Z. Myers couldn't convince him.

Gravatar Ouch -- that feint at the end gave me whiplash. "My point is ... Look! Over there! Terrorists!"

Gravatar JC Watts was a football player, right? Wide receiver or something?

Quarterback for the University of Oklahoma. Says it all.

Gravatar The Blitzer-Watts exchange is like a depressing "Who's on First."

Gravatar “you don't want to listen to the experts…. that says that evil people are trying to kill us.”

Maybe he thinks he’s a sperm. This pant load sort of reminds me of Woody Allen running around in his sperm suit.

I hope CNN had some stain remover to clean up his friggin chair.

Guys like this just want to control women. Most women won’t give these ass holes the time of day so they resort to controlling them though the law.

The next step for Watt will be burkas

Gravatar I think it is important to realize that Watts has articulated the next step in the process of authoritarian control of women. It is not enough to protect the pre born, now they intend to protect the potential rights of the preborn. The simplest way to do so is to repeat the lie and call the truth a difference of opinion. This rinse and repeat always reminds me of Lincolns statement about how you can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time. That saying has been running through my mind a lot this past five years.

Gravatar

WATTS: But you want to listen...

BLITZER: All right.

WATTS: ... to the experts on abortion, but you don't want to listen to the experts on the war that says that evil people are trying to kill us.

Nice switch! As soon as you realize you are losing the argument on Plan B, invoke 9/11 and the war on terra!

Gravatar J. C. Watts: You don't want to listen to the experts... that says that evil people are trying to kill us.

One attribute of people called "experts" is that they have not been repeatedly caught lying to the public regarding facts they know. Another attribute is that when they make predictions in their field of expertise they are not wrong one hundred percent of the time. I make it a point not to listen to any "experts" who are on record in 2003 saying things like "mobile anthrax factories," "cakewalk," "greeted with flowers," and "reconstruction to be paid for by oil revenues."

Gravatar Uhhh, if the moment the sperm "spurts" is the beginning of life, as in intercourse, then what is going on when men masturbate? Oh the horrors, just thinking about it? Ejaculation is "sacred?" Then, you men better stop wasting all that holiness in the bathroom!

Not only do these control creeps want to control women, they want to control reproduction as means of class warfare....keep the poor families full of children so they can't become viable competitors in the work force or anywhere else. (Of course, don't offer social services to all of these burdensome children either.) Keep the poor poor!!

Gravatar does watts really not understand that fertilization does not occur during intercourse?

is he really that ignorant or is he pretending?

(this is an honest question)
.

Gravatar after every thing the rethugs did to old JC he is still carrying water for them.

Gravatar Is it just me, or do these folks keep getting Plan B and Zyklon-B mixed up in their tiny minds?

No freudian slips here! None at all, nope!

Gravatar There should be no argument. It's not a matter of opinion like some issues concerning life and death. Someone has the correct answer (Press) and someone has the wrong answer (Watts).

But wingers never let the facts stand in the way of their inanities.

++++++++

You obviously didn't grow up Catholic.

Gravatar It's no surprise that the pro-life people are freaking out over Plan B. Plus advocating that women who do and will use Plan B are not considering the unwanted consequences of having sex. Have the pro-life people ever considered the consequences of war? Have they ever considered that there would be over 2000 soldiers dead because they didn't consider that invading a country with insufficient amount of troops and equipment would kill over 2000 soldiers? Is this the pro-life's form of Plan B?

Nora

Gravatar "I can't wait until the McMansions are empty and the streets are filled with the wailing of the repugs and liberals crying over the chinese takeover of their new colony. After all they will own the place and we will have to work just to stay here."

Pulitzer Prize winner John Hersey's novel "White Lotus" (1965) presents just such a "takeover". Highly recommended.
