From 1590 to 1605, there were tribal skirmishes. It's unclear to me but it seems they were essentially free from Guatemalan rule until 1595. Velazquez never made it to the area after being appointed in 1590. Did the settlers leave the tribes alone until the return of Velazquez's designee (forget the name) in 1595?
Is Rev. Wright really saying "God damn the Americas?" Is he saying something about the Europeans' arrival in the New World and subsequent conquest of aboriginal tribes?
